Job description

An exciting new opportunity has opened up for a Biosafety Officer to join the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team at Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Australia's leading medical research institute.

The Biosafety Officer role is a newly created position at the Institute, reporting to the Health & Safety Manager and maintaining close working relationships with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Laboratory and Technical Services (LATS) teams, as well as Hudson Research Centres.

The Biosafety Officer will be responsible for:

  • Advising Hudson researchers on relevant policies, procedures, and reporting requirements for Commonwealth and State regulatory requirements for regulatory bodies governing medical research
  • Maintaining and overseeing OGTR laboratory certification, the Institute's radiation and drugs & poisons licenses, and quarantine import permits
  • Assisting with the development, implementation, and delivery of research and laboratory resources, training programs, and compliance strategies for researchers, professional staff, and students

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in managing biological risks and compliance within biomedical research environments
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of OGTR regulatory requirements and proven experience working within a PC2 (or higher) containment facility
  • Highly developed communication skills and a proven ability to provide comprehensive, high-quality, and proactive advice and support on appropriate research and regulatory compliance frameworks

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL

Education/ Qualifications

  • The appointee will have a relevant tertiary biomedical degree and a minimum of 3 years of biomedical laboratory/research compliance experience.

Knowledge and skills

  • Extensive experience and demonstrated achievement in a similar role in a biomedical research institute (or University), with experience and knowledge of biological risk, compliance, and regulatory frameworks within scientific and biomedical laboratory environments.
  • Demonstrated capacity to understand, interpret, and advise stakeholders on the legislation, regulations, and standards that impact biomedical research (such as the Gene Technology Act 2000 (Cth), Biosecurity Act 2015 (Cth), National Health Security Act 2007 (Cth), and the relevant Australian/New Zealand Standards).
  • First-hand working experience within OGTR regulatory requirements.
  • Proven experience with the development and/or implementation of scientific research compliance awareness, communication, and/or training activities.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills with significant experience in developing and maintaining positive stakeholder relationships through effective communication and collaboration within a large and complex organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex and/or technical matters clearly to a variety of audiences, and produce a wide range of documents and reports for committees and governance groups.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to work autonomously and flexibly, manage competing demands, and prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and effectively as a member of a small professional specialist team, and handle sensitive and confidential issues maturely.
  • Highly developed computer literacy and use of database/records management systems.

DESIRABLE

  • Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety and/or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

Role Type: Full time or Part time (0.8 – 1.0 FTE)

Salary: Tap 7 – 8 ($100,273 – $124,519, based on experience) plus 11.5% super
