Job Description
Our client is an industry leading agribusiness with sophisticated sugar mill operations located in Townsville and surrounds. They are currently looking to fill 3 Cane Rail Labourer positions across their sites within the Burdekin Region, with work commencing in June 2024.
The Cane Rail Labourer is required to assist with track/bridge/civil construction and maintenance including earthworks, laying tracks and use of maintenance equipment. Supporting the recovery from bin derailments is also a key component of this position.
You will be paid under the Sugar Industry Award – Level 2, an hourly rate of $28.32 per hour, and seasonal contract with an average minimum of 38 hours per week.
Key duties include:
Work as a member of a team.
Operate vehicles – ability to obtain a Drivers License
Communicate effectively with other members of the team.
Maintain tools and equipment in good order.
Maintain good housekeeping at the work site and in the work vehicle.
Change sleepers under tramline and rail fasteners.
Pull line straight with crowbars.
Straighten bent line with a crow and form curves from straight line with a crow.
Pack ballast under and around sleepers utilising equipment that does not require a license.
Joint fettling by joining lengths of line together with fishplates and bolts.
Manual cleaning of turnouts to ensure their safe operation.
Basic metal cutting.
Work on Cane Rail bridges.
Other duties as directed by the Cane Rail Supervisor.

This is a level 2 position, an employee at this level is required to:
Work under supervision.
Exercise decision making/responsibility within their level of skill and training.
Demonstrate awareness of general quality control standards, in particular responsibility for their own work and advise of quality control problems where identified.
Assist with on the job training.
Service and adjust equipment according to their level of skill and training, and advise of any additional maintenance required.
Demonstrate general housekeeping skills.
Demonstrate ability to use common language skills to engage in communication and to read and understand written and oral communications plus prepare records that convey information accurately and concisely.
