Job Title: Cardiac Electrophysiologist - Darwin, NT
Salary details: Specialist/Senior Specialist - Remuneration dependent on skills and negotiable
Temporary: Contract up to 5 years with option to renew
Location: NT Cardiac at Darwin Private Hospital co-located Royal Darwin Hospital, Northern Territory, Australia

This position provides the opportunity to join NT Cardiac Pty Ltd, a well-established private cardiology practice conveniently located at the 100-bed Darwin Private Hospital (DPH) which is located next to Royal Darwin Hospital. NT Cardiac is contracted to the NT Government to provide cardiac diagnostic services including Echocardiography, Diagnostic Coronary Angiography / Angioplasty and Electrophysiology Services to public patients in the Northern Territory. This combined Public and Private Practice arrangement has been considered unique and has provided a high standard of care for both the public and private sectors. NT Cardiac has established a Cardiac Angiography Lab and a “Chest Pain Assessment Clinic” which has a full range of non-invasive cardiac investigations including a Canon's premium CT Scanner, the Aquilion ONE / PRISM Edition (640 Slice) for CT Coronary Angiograms. The Cardiac Electrophysiology service is mature, complete with 3D mapping system and Cryoablation console for complex arrhythmia.

Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) is a 345-bed tertiary Hospital which is designated as the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre and a teaching Hospital affiliated with Flinders University. The catchment area is vast, and includes urban communities, regional hospitals and remote Aboriginal communities. The hospital services a population of at least 140,000 with patients also being transferred from Northern Western Australia and Timor. Royal Darwin Hospital has a modern, fully equipped 9 bed coronary care unit which also has facilities for non-invasive respiratory support. Services are delivered in conjunction with contracted facilities at Darwin Private Hospital.

Diagnostic services include Exercise Stress Testing, Holter Monitoring, Transthoracic and Trans-oesophageal Echocardiography, Stress Echocardiogram, CT coronary angiography and Diagnostic Coronary Angiogram. Coronary intervention is also carried out. Cardiac devices such as Loop Recorders, Permanent Pacemakers, Defibrillators and Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT) are implanted. The Cardiac Electrophysiology service provides comprehensive care for patients with complex arrhythmias. Nuclear Cardiac Perfusion imaging services are also available on-site.

Successful candidate is required to have:

  • Successfully completed an advanced clinical fellowship in cardiac device and rhythm management service at a reputable centre of excellence.
  • Experience in basic and advanced electrophysiology procedures including electrophysiology studies and radiofrequency ablation of cardiac arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation by pulmonary vein isolation procedure.
  • Thorough knowledge on cardiac arrhythmias and the management of the same.
  • Training and experience in safe implantation and follow up of cardiac rhythm management devices including implantable cardiac defibrillators.
The Cardiology Department at RDH is vibrant and growing. There is a high percentage of cardiovascular and rheumatic heart disease in the young and diverse population which contributes to a varied, interesting, and satisfying work environment. The workforce currently includes 5 Cardiologists, 4 Registrars (2 Advanced Trainees and 2 Basic Physician Trainees) and 3 Resident Medical Officers supported by 4 dedicated Senior Cardiac Nurse Co-ordinators. There is an opportunity for the successful applicant to have a public position at the Royal Darwin Hospital to undertake general cardiology duties.

Applicants must be eligible for registration with AHPRA (Medical Board of Australia) together with a Cardiology accredited Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent specialist overseas qualifications.
