Taronga Zoo Sydney is looking for a experienced and motivated Casual Gardeners and Horticulturalists to join our Assets team at the Zoo!
Shift times generally range from 6:30am - 2:30pm
Casual shifts on offer, 7 days per week
About the Role…
The successful individuals will provide general gardening and grounds maintenance duties, includes floral displays, landscape maintenance, turf care and animal exhibit plant maintenance, collection of browse for Taronga’s animal population from off-site locations and record keeping.
The successful Horticulturalists will also provide horticultural services for the presentation of exhibits and general facilities, maintenance of bush land area using bush regeneration and revegetation techniques, tree health and management of browse plantations for essential animal food collection.
Key Accountabilities…
Gardeners:
Perform basic tasks associated with horticulture and gardening works under direction from horticulturalists, within grounds, exhibits and off-site locations.
Undertake general duties as assigned, including the maintenance of allocated grounds and exhibits. Duties may include weeding, pruning, mulching, watering, hedge trimming and lawn maintenance.
Undertake duties related to the efficient harvest of browse for essential animal nutrition and upkeep of browse plantations under direction from the Horticulturalist and/or Manager, Horticulture.
Assist Horticulturalists with record keeping including research, identification, cataloguing, data collection, and labelling of plant species across zoo grounds, exhibits, browse plantations and harbour foreshore.
Work effectively as a member of a high performing team, to assist Taronga in achieving strategic outcomes.
Horticulturalists:
Carry out a broad spectrum of horticultural duties including, general grounds, garden and lawn maintenance, species identification, browse production &harvest, revegetation, turf management and weed control including the administering of approved chemicals.
Provide technical expertise and advice to Gardeners and other labour resources on general grounds maintenance (including remnant bush areas, harbour foreshore and offsite browse collection sites including browse plantations).
Undertake a variety of landscaping projects within grounds and exhibits, including providing horticultural expertise on landscape design.
Undertake bush regeneration and revegetation in and around Taronga premises.
Coach, support and mentor allocated staff including Gardeners and Horticultural Apprentices & Volunteers.
Actively contribute to record keeping including research, identification, cataloguing, data collection and labelling of plant species across zoo grounds, exhibits, browse plantations and harbour foreshore.
About You…
We are looking for candidates that have:
Previous gardening, grounds maintenance or browse collection experience.
Current NSW Driver’s License or ability to have existing license formally recognised, including ability to drive manual.
Pre-employment medical assessment (expenses covered by Taronga)
Obtain and maintain a current paid NSW Working with Children Check at own expense.
Horticulturalists must have the above, and also hold a recognised Trade of Horticulture certificate or equivalent experience.
