Darwin Greyhound Association
Beginning in the 1960’s the Darwin Greyhound Association Inc. (DGA) is the only registered greyhound racetrack in the Northern Territory, and regards itself as industry leader in the trainer, racing and welfare of greyhounds. The DGA conducts approximately 70 race meetings a year with the feature event $45,000.00 Darwin Cup conducted in early August.
Darwin Greyhound Association is a strong supporter of rehoming retired greyhounds with policies and practises put in place to support owners and trainers to work with welfare agencies in this area.
About The Role
The Casual Groundsman will support the Track Manager in the preparation and presentation of the racetrack, maintenance of the facilities, and general upkeep of the grounds at the Club. The role assists in providing safe racing facilities for both greyhounds and participants, an attractive and well-maintained environment for all stakeholders, race day patrons and visitors in line with the Club & Greyhound Racing standards of the Northern Territory.
This is a casual role encompassing the weekly Sunday race meeting. It will be for a minimum of 20 hours with the possibility of more hours around the Cup carnival times and on race meetings. The successful applicant may be required to work outside of the normal weekly hours and in line with business demand and the racing schedule.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the preparation of a satisfactory and consistent racetrack for both racing and trialling.
- Set up and maintain track infrastructure and race day equipment for both racing and trialling.
- Assist with the general maintenance and repairs to facilities as required.
- Assist with the upkeep and presentation of grounds and gardens.
- Assist with the regular inspection and periodic maintenance of all equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain a safe, secure and clean workshop.
- Under guidance, undertake routine maintenance and servicing of equipment.
- Assist in the cleaning of the kennelling area after racing and trialling as required.
- To deputise for the Track Manager during periods of leave as required.
Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
- Current Driver’s License and the ability to learn to drive a tractor and tow.
- Ability to work in a small team and to actively contribute to a positive culture.
- Possess sound time management skills and strong work ethic.
- Lateral thinker and problem solver with the confidence to present views.
- Ability to work unsupervised and take a leadership role when required.
- Knowledge of the racing industry would be highly regarded, but not essential.
- Ability & willingness to attend Industry forums & educational seminars as required by the management.
Workplace Training
The successful candidate will receive onsite training. Training and education will be provided from time to time and forms an essential part of the role.
