The Research Associate will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on a Faculty funded Project entitled “Mapping the housing stability of single parent families”.
The aim of the project is to map the housing circumstances and stability of single parent households with dependent children in Australia. This research will benefit policymakers and housing researchers by providing essential information on the housing need and circumstances of a historically disadvantaged group and provide awareness for the benefit of single parent households themselves.
The research will not only reveal the challenges faced by single parent families, but also reveal challenges in achieving housing stability for disadvantaged groups more generally.
This project will involve four main activities:
Literature review: an extensive literature review of existing academic research on the housing stability of single parent families in Australia and worldwide will be conducted, identifying the common experiences and challenges single parent families face in finding housing stability.
Policy review: A policy review of Australian housing policies and laws that directly (e.g. Shared Equity Home Buyer Helper) or indirectly (tenancy discrimination laws) impact the housing stability of single parent families will be conducted.
Housing analysis: An analysis of historical and latest ABS Census and HILDA data will be conducted to understand the housing circumstances of single parent families through time (dwelling types, household suitability, tenure changes, mobility, housing to income ratios)
Geographical analysis: An analysis of historical and latest ABS Census, HILDA and property and rental price data to investigate mobility of single parent families through time (locations moved to and from), and housing opportunity for single parent families in different Australian LGAs will be conducted.
