Job description

Position Summary

Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) is a community controlled Public Benevolent Institution delivering human services and social enterprise activities for the benefit of Aboriginal people from the Alice Springs Town Camps, urban Alice Springs, and Central Australia.

This position will work with community stakeholders in remote communities, in the CAYLUS service area, supporting them in developing and implementing strategies to prevent and reduce the impact of substance misuse on young people and families.

The position will be required to work proactively and independently to identify emerging issues and possible actions to address them and bring them to management for discussion of possible implementation.

As part of your role, you will be working with children, people with a disability and people who are vulnerable. It is your obligation to always ensure their safety and report any concerns in line with our duty of care obligations. We have zero tolerance when it comes to abuse of any kind and will take disciplinary action, including and up to termination of employment, should we determine that abuse has taken place or there has been a failure to report any suspected or alleged abuse.

Responsibilities

• Work with remote communities in CAYLUS Region to support the development of community specific strategies to address substance abuse including:

o The development of sustainable and appropriate youth activities and programs.

o Assisting communities to access funding for local initiatives.

o Promoting linkages between remote communities and relevant programs and services.

• Develop and maintain a work plan to document planned actions/activities and achievement of these.

• Assist CAYLUS to provide advocacy to government and services on behalf of remote communities, partner services and clients.

• Undertake casework including facilitating client access to rehab and detox facilities with support from the CAYLUS Caseworker.

• Represent CAYLUS in our work with Commonwealth, the NT Government, Local Government, and other non-government representatives as requested.

• Oversee recruitment, contracting and supervision of casual and contract staff.

• Contribute to maintaining and improving the CAYLUS office environment and CAYLUS administrative systems.

• Work in compliance with relevant policies and procedures.

• Provide written and verbal reports.

• Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.

• Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.

• Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.

• Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

• Demonstrated ability to work constructively with a wide range of stakeholders to design and enact practical strategies to reduce or prevent substance abuse in remote communities.

• Ability to work in remote areas, including the ability to drive unaccompanied to such areas and reside in them during the course of such work.

• Ability to work during the NT summer and winter school holiday periods.

• Ability to work in an informed, appropriate, and sensitive manner with Aboriginal people.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and to set up and use administrative systems.

• Ability to gather relevant information and prepare reports.

• Knowledge of youth issues, communities, geography, and resources in the region.

• Current NT Drivers Licence, NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desired

• Qualifications in Community Development, Social Work, Youth Work, AOD, Public Health or similar are desirable.

• Experience living in a remote community.

• Local Indigenous language skills.

• Experience working with substance misuse affected young people and families.

• Casework experience.

• Current First Aid Certificate, or ability and willingness to attain.

• An understanding of Aboriginal culture as well as a broad range of contemporary issues affecting Central Australian Aboriginal people.
