CSIRO's Manufacturing Business Unit brings together multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering capabilities to develop innovative products and processes facilitating Australian manufacturers to be globally competitive and environmentally sustainable.
We are looking for a Research Technician in the Alloys and Metallics Composites team to contribute to the development of value-add processes for critical minerals including rare earth elements and refractory metals.
If you are a team player with prior experience in sample characterisation who enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary team then do not hesitate to apply.
Your duties will include:
  • Undertake sample characterisation and materials property testing including SEM, TGA, hardness testing and XRD analysis where required.
  • Carry out scientific activities involving metal production within the extractive metallurgy laboratory.
  • Assist with general technical aspects, including maintenance of laboratory, working environment and chemical inventory.
  • Undertake sample preparation including inert atmosphere sampling and characterisation where required.
  • Handle commercially sensitive data and information in accordance with CSIRO requirements.
  • Communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully and work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO's scientific objectives.
  • Adhere to safe work practices when working with hazardous materials (including pyrophoric chemicals) and scientific equipment including maintaining clean workspaces.
  • Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO's Values, Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy and diversity initiatives.
  • Other duties as directed.
Location: Clayton, Melbourne VIC
Salary: AU$68k - AU$86k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term up to 2 years /full-time

To be considered you will need:
Essential
  • Relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience in any relevant discipline such as chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills to a range of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and able to carry out tasks autonomously.
  • Demonstrated characterisation experience in techniques such as SEM, XRD, XRF or TGA analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience of adherence to standard operating procedures and supporting safety documentation.
Desirable
  • Experience working with hazardous materials or reactive metal powders.
  • Understanding or experience of powder metallurgy.
  • Understanding of metal value chains.
