Clinical Neurophysiology Scientist

About this role

This position performs diagnostic procedures and neurophysiological monitoring within the Neurology Department, including the WA Adult Epilepsy Service, ensuring an efficient and effective output is maintained.

This role reports to the Supervisor Clinical Neurophysiology Scientist.

Area Profile

SCGH is one of Australia's leading teaching tertiary hospitals. Located at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre 4km from Perth city centre, SCGH provides a comprehensive range of clinical services including trauma, emergency and critical care, orthopaedics, general medicine, general surgery, and cardiac care. It is home to WA's only comprehensive cancer centre - the largest cancer treatment centre in the State - and is the State's principal hospital for neurosurgery and liver transplants.

The Neurology Department diagnoses and treats all facets of neurological disease including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, Motor Neurone Disease and Stroke. The department has links with clinical research trials and has a close working relationship with the Perron Institute which runs specialty clinics including movement disorders, refractory epilepsy, neuro-immunology, neuro-genetics and neuromuscular disorders.

Our continued high standard depends on investment into training today for the neurologists of tomorrow. With a strong affiliation with the University of Western Australia there are regular teaching sessions held by the neurologists for medical students at various levels of their training. Topics include stroke, epilepsy, headache, vascular problems and meningitis/encephalitis. Regular inter-hospital teaching meetings are held every Friday morning as well as regular case discussions and mortality morbidity reviews on Monday mornings.

The Department is currently heavily involved in a joint initiative of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Department of Health in the improvement and management of patients who present with chest pain or stroke. The aim is to ensure that all patients with these two conditions receive the best emergency treatment and secondary prevention that is both evidence-based and expeditiously provided. The project offers a very good opportunity for neurologists and two Stroke Units to ‘front load’ acute stroke care. It will require collaboration with Emergency Departments of three campuses including country areas.
