About the opportunity

Are you a Registered Nurse with 3 years critical care nursing experience in either an Emergency Department, ICU/HDU or retrieval environment looking for your next venture outside of the hospital environment? Then look no further!

Based in the Aeromedical Control Centre in Eveleigh you will be involved in triaging and facilitating the provision of clinical advice and sourcing an appropriate receiving hospital when required for acutely and critically ill patients. The Clinical Coordinator monitors patient transfers to ensure clinically appropriate progress.

You will work alongside a passionate multidisplinary team including Aeromedical Control Centre officers, rapid launch trauma coordinators, state retrieval consultants and duty aeromedical managers.

This position is for a period of twelve (12) months with possible extension.

About the Unit

Aeromedical Control Centre (ACC) provides state-wide 24 hour clinical and logistical support and coordination. This includes:

  • Pre-hospital tasking of medical teams on the basis of clinical or situational information within the original Triple Zero (000) call or further information gained through call backs or paramedic MIST reports.
  • Inter-hospital retrieval of patients with critical illness or injury requiring an upgrade of care or specialty services; severe burns, spinal cord injuries, major trauma, clot retrieval, cardiac catheterisation.
  • Specialist retrievals; intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • Search and rescue; PLB / EPIRB activation, offshore vessel patient retrieval, patients in a remote or inaccessible location.
  • Long distance (
250km) medical transfers. * Transport of Newborn and paediatric Transport Service (NETS) medical teams and patients.

What we are looking for:

To be successful in this role the following skills and experience are required:
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Recently acquired 3 years critical care nursing experience in either an Emergency Department, ICU/HDU or retrieval environment. Additionally, a minimum of 2 years Full Time Equivalent ED experience and 1-year Full Time Equivalent demonstrated triage experience or triage experience in a similar environment.
  • Demonstrated advanced critical care assessment, care planning and problem-solving skills for acutely ill and critically ill patients. Ability to triage and identify the clinical needs of patients in an environment of competing priorities.
  • Relevant post graduate qualifications, such as a graduate certificate in emergency, critical care, intensive care, aviation nursing or similar, and above. Tertiary hospital experience and midwifery qualifications are desirable.
  • Sound understanding of the NSW Health Trauma, Critical Care Networks Policy Directives and ability to apply these in the context of patient transfer decision making.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills in communication, consultation, negotiation and conflict resolution in multidisciplinary groups as they relate to patient care.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to work as a member of a team and act as a resource and mentor to others in relation to clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated typing skills and computer literacy with experience on Windows based computer applications.
