PASO Medical 

Established in 2004, PASO Medical is one of Victoria’s leading integrated provider of Oncology and Haematology services based in Frankston, Victoria. PASO Medical comprises three integrated units: Consulting Suites, Private Same Day Hospital (Infusion Centre) and Clinical Trials Team. PASO Medical prides itself on having a dedicated purpose-built space for conducting Clinical Trials and an on-site Clinical Trials team who work collaboratively with patients who wish to participate in Clinical Trials. The Role 

As a Clinical Trial Oncology Nurse you will implement, manage and coordinate Clinical Trials associated with the launch of a new oncology drug discovered in Australia

The Clinical Trial Oncology Nurse works within the Clinical Trials Team, the Infusion Centre and alongside the Clinical Research Manager. The role assists with projects and duties assigned by the Clinical Research Manager ensuring assigned duties are completed in a timely, efficient, productive, and organized manner. The Clinical Trial Oncology Nurse provides comprehensive and patient centered care through leading, engaging and collaborating with the community. The Clinical Trial Oncology Nurse coordinates and manages the delivery of oncology treatments, to assigned patients, ensuring adherence to PASO Medical’s and PASO Medical Infusion Centre’s policies, and nursing procedures, standards, and practices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working closely with the Clinical Research Manager and ensure clinical trial patients are registered, screened and recruited as per PASO Protocol and all aspects of clinical protocols and trials are properly documented 
  • Ensure all consent forms are appropriately signed and patients are duly informed of all relevant information. Support the organisation for site selection including keeping all relevant clinical staff informed. 
  • Assist the Clinical Research Manager in preparing the trial budget and Monitor visitors for trials 
  • Attend and participate in all relevant department meetings 
  • Identify problems and areas for improvement in a trial or project and recommend / take necessary / steps to overcome identified problems 
  • Ensure all case report forms (paper or electronic) are completed and dispatched to the appropriate authorities within established timeframes. 
  • Liaise between principal investigator, sub investigators and research team to coordinate patient care. 
  • Undertake participant screening procedures (organize screening requirements as per trial specific protocol, coordinate scans+blood tests, involve family to support, interpreters if needed, patient transport to attend visits). 
  • Ensure that no source data is to be recorded directly in a CRF unless specified in the trial protocol and agreed to by all parties. This information however should be documented in the patients notes for future verification of processes 
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with trial sponsor representatives, trial organizers and other relevant personnel. 
  • Ensure that no breaches of patient, sponsor or departmental confidentiality occur and undertakes appropriate actions if errors are made 
  • Prepare report, documents and correspondence as required 
  • Create, quality-checks, and files all study-related regulatory and paper source documents 
  • Participate in special projects to continuously improve processes, tools, systems and organization 
  • Demonstrate understanding and adherence to PASO Values 
  • Assisting with Ethics application preparation and submissions 
  • Comply with OH&S legislation and operate in accordance with established OH&S practice and procedures at PASO Medical. 
  • Delivering targeted medicines and therapies which includes monitoring and administering intravenous infusions.
  • Managing and reporting Triage of compromised patients or patients needing complex care
  • Conduct preventative screening 
  • Assessment, education and sound knowledge of medications and treatment of related side effects.
  • Care, management and insertion of central access and peripheral devices.
  • Maintain, update electronic medical records (EMR) within a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues and contribute to the development of a high performing team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate positively and to actively encourage a positive team culture and environment.
  • Assists Health Care Providers (HCP’s) with procedures that may or may not require moderate sedation.
  • Perform assessment, access, and maintenance of venous access devices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation using clinical software including recall/reminder systems, IT and information management.
  • Demonstrate understanding of workplace health and safety principles.
  • Ensure quality systems are in place and reviewed regularly and Manage supplies and clinical resources within budget.
  • Ensure clinical governance and safe use of medicines following federal/state legislation.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures including starting peripheral IVs and drawing blood from midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, and ports.
  • Act as a resource to other Cancer Clinic nursing staff and participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of educational initiatives and policies and procedures,
  • Patient assessment, observation and education including expert management of treatment related side effects.
  • Focused on maintaining current knowledge and a proven track record of a commitment to professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in nursing and primary health care principles, collaborate with the practice team and communicate effectively with external stakeholders including service providers and referrers.
  • Work on quality improvement strategies with the practice team to bring efficiencies to practice systems, procedures and clinical outcomes.
  • Maintain awareness of current legislation to ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory obligations

Key Criteria

  • Attention to detail and a sound level of competency in the use of computers
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational and communication skills
  • Current Registration with AHPRA (Minimum 2 years Post Grad Qualification)
  • Working with Police check
  • Experience with understanding of Oncology and Haematology nursing principles.
  • Experienced administering cytotoxic chemotherapy and/or related cancer treatments 
  • Competency in PICC, PORT, IV Cannulation and phlebotomy skills or working towards
  • ADAC qualification or Working towards
  • Blood safe and Hand hygiene competencies mandatory
  • CVAD management experience
  • Compliance with ACQSHC National standards
  • Blood safe and Hand hygiene 
  • Works well independently and within a team
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organizational priorities and ambiguous environments
