Job description

 COMMISSIONER FOR LGBTIQA+ COMMUNITIES

  • Build on the legacy
  • Influence reform
  • Deliver outcomes for LGBTIQA+ Victorians

 About the organisation

Established in 2015, the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities has been integral in partnering with Victoria's diverse LGBTIQA+ communities to foster an inclusive community in Victoria.   The Commissioner works to ensure that all LGBTIQA+ people experience equality of opportunity, legal equality and access to safe services and targeted supports across the state, when and where they need them.

About the role

The Commissioner will play a key role in guiding the Victorian Government's efforts to achieve LGBTIQA+ equality over the next decade. Influencing policy, social norms, cultural expectations and attitudes towards equality are core to the Commissioner's mission.  Leading a small team and working closely with the Equality Unit in the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, the Commissioner provides an independent, critical link in advising government on matters of importance to LGBTIQA+ communities.   Fostering effective stakeholder relationships and providing a focus for important meaningful conversations, the Commissioner will liaise across government and non-government sectors in a variety of forums and contexts while managing the operational functions of the office.

About you

You offer a nuanced understanding of complex LGBTIQA+ issues and are known for your influence and ability to work with all.  You have a proven understanding of government or other relevant, organisational environments and have effectively engaged with community in your professional roles. Your demonstrated leadership and management capability has been cultivated in highly accountable, complex environments. As a seasoned professional, you have a well-rounded understanding of organisational operations and maximising resources. You inspire others, create value through outcomes and deftly navigate politics and platforms. You thrive on challenge, embrace accountability and are driven to assist the Victorian public sector to ensure that LGBTIQA+ Victorians' experience outcomes that set a standard for all.

ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE

  • Advise the Victorian Government on current and emerging issues, relevant research and the impact of government policies, initiatives and programs on diverse LGBTIQA+ communities.
  • Report regularly to the Minister for Equality (the Minister) on priority issues related to LGBTIQA+ Victorians as agreed with the Minister, including strategic implications and providing options for addressing issues affecting LGBTIQA+ communities.
  • Actively engage and consult with all LGBTIQA+ Victorian communities – including age cohorts from younger to older people, communities in interface, regional and rural areas, First Nations communities, multicultural and multifaith community members and people with disabilities – on the range of place-based issues and needs.
