Doomadgee is a successful, largely Indigenous, community in the northwest of Queensland, located in the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is the traditional homelands of the Gangalidda and Waanyi people, but many other people from Indigenous nations across Australia have also made Doomadgee their home including the Garrawa and Yunjulla people.
The township is not an Outback tourist destination and is governed by the .
Doomadgee is a place where you make your own fun with many places to visit, camp, fish and swim.
There are 2 seasons in this area of Queensland: `Wet' runs Oct-Feb and the `Dry' starts in March.
About the role
Develop, support and assist with implementing initiatives, in accordance with community wishes and priorities, to reduce harm associated with the misuse of alcohol and other drugs and to improve mental wellbeing.
The position is community-based, and the incumbent will be expected to work with a broad range of individuals across both ATODS & Mental health teams within the Doomadgee Community.
Doomadgee Hospital is a Level Two (2) remote hospital under the Rural and Remote Clinical Services Capability Framework with seven (7) inpatient beds. The facility provides 24 hour acute inpatient and accident and emergency care, as well as a GP clinic.
The Doomadgee community has an alcohol management strategy that applies to all residents and visitors. Availability of alcohol in the community is limited and conditions apply to consumption. No private individual is permitted to take alcohol into the Doomadgee community.
Requirements
Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
Pre-employment screening will be conducted for the successful candidate; this may include criminal history checks, confirmation of attribute, working with children (Blue Card) and Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) risk role compliance. VPD risk roles may require evidence of vaccination or immunity to: Hepatitis A/B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis, Tuberculosis and COVID-19. A 3-month period of probation may apply.
