The Role
The Paper and Photograph conservator contributes to the professional conservation, preservation and storage of items from the National Collection. The primary work of this position is the ongoing survey, treatment, preservation and maintenance programs for a range of Paper and related paper-based objects including works of art on paper, documents, maps, posters, photographs and other paper-based objects. The conservator assists in the development and implementation of new and improved conservation processes and techniques; documents work performed; may supervise other staff and prepares items for access, storage and exhibition and contributes to team, section and Memorial activities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Under general direction from the Senior Conservator, Paper and Photographs
  • Use established and innovative techniques and procedures to carry out conservation and preservation treatments on a range of paper based objects including works of art on paper, documents and Photographs for exhibitions, loans, new acquisitions, storage and other preservation programs including hazard mitigation
  • Document all conservation, preservation and collection management activities on the Memorial’s Collection Management System
  • Undertake scientific analysis, testing and research to determine composition, conditioand deterioration processes of the Memorial’s collection as required
  • Assist in the development of new conservation techniques and practices
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver conservation programs including gallery maintenance and integrated pest management.
  • Provide conservation and preservation advice to other sections of the Memorial, professional colleagues and to the public
  • Assist in the supervision of other staff, interns and volunteers and with their training and development
  • Conduct manual handling tasks including movement of a wide range of collection material including but not limited to works of art on paper, books, documents, photographs and frames
