Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist
Horsham
Fixed term part time – 38 hours per fortnight
$207.20 per hour

About the role

In partnership with the Clinical Director, Women’s and Children’s Services, Midwifery Director support the Division of Women’s and Children’s Health to achieve optimum health outcomes for patients at Grampians Health – Horsham campus.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Grampians Health Services – Horsham provides inpatient and outpatient services for the women of Horsham and surrounding regions. Clinics offered in this service include antenatal care, gestational diabetes, high risk pregnancy care, surgical gynaecology, colposcopy, and family planning.

The maternity service at Horsham is the birthplace for approximately 300 - 400 births annually and is a level 4 service in the Victorian Maternity Services Capability Framework. Our maternity service cares for women birthing from 36 weeks and is supported by our Paediatric Service, in partnership with the Grampians Health – Ballarat campus maternity service.

The successful applicant would work in clinical areas of inpatient and outpatient obstetrics and gynaecology services in Horsham. This includes participating in the on-call roster overnight and on weekends. The unit is supported by junior doctors, another fulltime obstetrician and GP obstetrician.

Key Accountabilities

  • Participate in monitoring care outcomes for mothers and children through maternity service case review/ Maternal and Perinatal meeting.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing clinical protocols and pathways for O&G
  • Perform daily ward rounds of obstetrics and gynaecology patients
  • Undertake elective operating lists and outpatient consulting sessions
  • Participate in the on-call roster for obstetrics and gynaecology patients. When on call at weekends, to review all patients in the obstetrics and gynaecology wards or Emergency Department when requested by O and G resident medical staff or senior midwives
  • Participate in teaching for Resident Medical Staff and Midwives

Clinical Duties

  • Obstetrics: Participate in birth suite consultant cover, maternity antenatal clinic and the obstetric on call roster as rostered. Supervise and teach junior medical staff in obstetrics. Work collaboratively within the team including with midwives, general practitioners, paediatricians, anaesthetists, social workers, and any staff involved in patient care.
  • Gynaecology: Participate in gynaecology clinic, on call consultant duties day and night as rostered including care of emergency gynaecology patients, operating suite duties as rostered. Teach and supervise junior medical staff in gynaecology.
  • Be available exclusively for Grampians Health services when rostered as the on-call consultant. During the day, it is expected that the rostered consultant is on site in the hospital from 0730 am to 530pm. During the evening and overnight, it is expected the rostered consultant is available for phone advice and to attend the hospital within 20 minutes of being requested to. The on-call consultant must attend if requested to by junior medical staff onsite or if requested to by the midwife in charge of birth suite.
  • Assist with effective bed management and discharge planning for patients throughout Grampians Health Services.
