About the Victorian Fetal Alcohol Service (VicFAS)

The Monash Children’s Hospital provides all paediatric and neonatal services for Monash Health across three campuses MMC Clayton, Dandenong and Casey hospitals. It is Australia’s third largest children’s hospital and Victoria’s largest provider of neonatal services, with 226 beds across three campuses.

The Victorian Fetal Alcohol Service (VicFAS) is a specialist assessment service based at the Monash Children’s Hospital, which undertakes multi-disciplinary diagnosis of children with prenatal alcohol exposure and complex neurological, developmental, and behavioural symptoms. The service provides clinical training in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) diagnosis for paediatricians, psychologists, speech therapists, teachers, occupational therapists, and social workers. A secondary consultation service is available for paediatricians. VicFAS is led by the Head of FASD Services, Developmental and Community Paediatrics and the team includes a Clinic Coordinator, paediatrician, neuropsychologist, school teacher, speech therapist, social worker and occupational therapist.

Children referred from a statewide catchment for assessment with VicFAS will typically experience severe impairments in multiple areas including cognition, attention, learning, speech and language, motor skills, executive function or adaptive functioning. They will have a history of prenatal alcohol exposure and are also likely to experience other complex psychosocial factors affecting their development and functioning.

VicFAS current service extends within Regional Victoria to provide additional diagnosis, support and education to children aged 3-10yrs, families and health practitioners.  The Regional VicFAS program involves diagnostic outreach clinics to regional sites, a Regional Consultation service, and support to the regional VicFAS navigators.

The VicFAS is supported by the Developmental Paediatrics team at Monash Children’s Hospital.

About the Role

There is an opportunity for a Paediatrician experienced in Developmental paediatrics to contribute to the VicFAS team at Monash Children’s Hospital, to undertake assessment of children with pre-natal alcohol exposure and broader neurodevelopmental problems who have been identified as being at risk of FASD.  The Paediatrician will attend monthly clinics to provide high level clinical assessments, contribute to multidisciplinary formulation, provide education to students and trainees, provide feedback to families and caregivers, and clinical recommendations as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They will provide secondary consultation advice and review of reports to paediatricians to assist in local diagnosis and management.

Further training in relation to FASD is supported and facilitated by the Service.

Research involvement will be integrated with clinical duties.

The Paediatrician will also participate in a range of development activities for the service not specific to their professional discipline. This may include representation at forums with peer programs or conducting FASD-specific activities for nominated patients or other activities as directed.
