About Us:
 

British Solar Renewables (BSR) has a strong track record in developing, constructing, and operating projects in the United Kingdom, including the UK’s four largest utility-scale PV projects and large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). BSR’s Australian entity, BSR EPC Pty Limited (BSR Australia) delivered four utility-scale PV and BESS EPC projects in the Northern Territory and are currently completing a turnkey project in Victoria, Australia. 

BSR Australia is looking to become a market leading Integrated renewable energy developer, EPC, and IPP in Australia with a focus on greenfield initiated projects. The IT/OT Engineer will design, deploy, and support the communication and monitoring systems on new and existing distributed energy projects.

As new PV and battery sites increasing rely on their communication networks for operation, BSR needs to ensure that new designs meet the current requirements for performance and cybersecurity and that older designs are maintained and upgraded in line with current industry practises.

What you will be doing in this role:
 

Reporting to either the Head of Post Construction OR Operations Director, this is a newly created role based in either the Brisbane or Melbourne office with occasional travel expected throughout Australia to project sites to provide support. 

As the first member of the Australian IT/OT team, the role will suit someone who is willing and able to be hands on in the delivery of IT and OT engineering project services, essential for supporting the planning and execution of BSR Australia’s IT and OT systems. With the support of the UK IT team, your primary function will be to serve as a technical authority, providing IT/OT expertise to project teams to ensure the successful delivery of projects at the desired standard of quality. 

The IT/OT Engineer will collaborate closely within project teams, engaging with both internal and external stakeholders to facilitate effective planning and implementation of projects involving OT assets. Your duties will encompass conducting investigations, option analyses, preliminary and detailed designs, design reviews, testing, and commissioning, all aimed at ensuring the excellence of OT projects and a smooth transition from project phase to operational phase.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated, pro-active, professional, conscientious, approachable, and a team player. They must be comfortable working in a dynamic team, in a fast-paced environment. The nature of this role requires exceptional communication skills with preference given to knowledge in the renewable energy industry in Australia.

 What we need from you: 

  • Provide effective technical support including troubleshooting, performing diagnostics checks and ultimately resolution of the issue.
  • Ensure calls are logged, prioritised and dealt with in a timely manner as outlined in IT operating procedures.
  • Utilise Endpoint Manager to assist with the deployment and management of all end user desktops and laptops (Windows 10 & 11).
  • Working with the IT Systems Administrator manage appropriate levels of access to systems via regular review to minimise risk of data loss or exfiltration,
  • Perform upgrades and deployments of all software used by BSR as guided by Group IT.
  • Perform management tasks in Active Directory, including user creation, user deletion and group management.
  • Deploy and support mobile phones and tablets (Android & iOS)
  • Participate in rigorous inventory control for both hardware and software licensing to make sure that all assets are utilised before additional purchases are authorised.
  • Write engaging user guidance and training documentation for systems used by BSR.
  • Perform IT inductions for new members of staff.
  • Arrange safe disposal/recycling of old equipment following WEEE regulations.
  • Aid the IT Systems Administrator in the roll-out of new technologies and upgrades. 
  • Liaise with 3rd parties where need to resolve issues with hardware and software.
  • Design of communication and monitoring systems, including LAN and WAN networks, for new distributed energy projects
  • Consider cybersecurity in new designs and in maintenance and upgrades of existing systems
  • Liaising with other teams, both internal and external to ensure that the overall project designs integrate smoothly
  • Working with and managing relevant suppliers and sub-contractors, e.g. data acquisition system providers, vendor service support teams, hardware suppliers, and CCTV contractors
  • Producing documentation needed to implement the communication and monitoring, and CCTV system designs, e.g. cable schedules, network diagrams, and register lists
  • Planning and carrying out maintenance of communications and monitoring systems software and hardware installed at solar PV and battery energy storage plants throughout the UK
  • Installing, maintaining, and patching server operating systems; supporting application software and improving the monitoring of remote systems OT networks
  • Working closely with the UK IT team, sharing communications systems technical knowledge with the wider team by producing and updating documentation and operating instructions for the systems in use
  • Supporting operational staff with monitoring, data acquisition, security, and CCTV systems issue resolutions
  • Adherence to and development of BSR Group’s Quality Management System and processes
  • Safeguarding the organization’s IT assets, networks, and data from malicious threats
  •  Review and provide feedback for security vulnerabilities in both hardware and software already deployed or being considered and take appropriate actions to resolve.
  • Installing and managing firewalls, access controls, and security solutions 
  • Maintain perimeter network security through the management and regular configuration reviews of edge network devices including but not limited to firewalls, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Actively monitor IT systems and proactively resolve any potential security vulnerability

Mandatory Skills

  • Previous experience working in Microsoft 365 and Azure environments  
  • Excellent configuration/troubleshooting, analytical and diagnostic skills 
  • Knowledge of IT/OT networks and design principles; segmentation, VLANs, NAT, VPNs
  • Industrial communication protocols including Modbus RTU / TCP, RS485 / serial communications
  • Some Linux system administration experience, primarily the Red Hat ecosystem
  • Basic Windows administration knowledge
  • Solid understanding of information processing fundamentals and best practices.
  • Understanding of IT/OT security requirements
  • Scripting and integration using any of; Python, PowerShell, JSON, web APIs etc
  • Technical problem-solving skills and an aptitude for implementing new ideas
  • Self motivated; able to work remotely and independently
  • Desire to self-educate on the ever-changing landscape of both IT infrastructure and cyber security
  • Strong communicator with patience and perseverance, able to troubleshoot and problem-solve with remote staff or equipment
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of IT systems.
  • A forensic approach to challenges.
  • Information and cyber security awareness.
  • Comfortable supporting both Android and iOS mobile devices. 

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of PV specific and general industrial data acquisition systems
  • Knowledge of Intune endpoint management
  • Experience of any of the following network equipment; Fortinet firewalls and switches, Moxa industrial networking
  • Experience of working with digital or analogue sensors
  • PV, battery, and power electronics background knowledge
  • Basic AutoCAD skills

Education:

  • Ideally an undergraduate degree in IT engineering and/or STEM subject that provides a demonstrable background in IT, computing, computer networking, or electronics via relevant course modules. 
  • IT-related technical proficiency or security qualifications e.g. SANS, Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or similar are advantageous, but not essential
