The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) has a new opportunity for a lawyer to join our team and support clients with a range of criminal matters.
TALS specialises in providing advice and support in the areas of criminal, civil, and family law to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Tasmania, and does so in a culturally appropriate, inclusive, and supportive way. We also influence policy and law reform.

The role
As a Criminal Lawyer with TALS, you will provide advice, information, and representation in a variety of criminal matters within the northern region and across Tasmania. The role also involves providing community legal education and working closely with the team to ensure our clients receive culturally considered legal assistance.
What we are looking for
- Experience working in the Magistrates Court, with experience in the Supreme Court looked upon favorably.
- An understanding of the social issues faced by members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- A team player, working positively with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- High level of personal initiative, resourcefulness, and diligence.
- Basic competency in the use of MS Office and the capacity to quickly acquire competency in the use of the TALS client database.
