  • Salary commensurate with experience $72,521 to $135,507 pa (restricted practice lawyer range is $63,962 to $69,224) plus superannuation

About the role

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to join Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited (ALSWA) as a Criminal Lawyer in our Perth Office. 

This position requires a person who is highly organised, self-motivated with demonstrated ability to appear as an advocate in criminal courts and who is passionate about providing high quality legal assistance to Aboriginal people.

Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.

The lawyer is required to provide legal assistance, including appearing as counsel in criminal matters in metropolitan or regional courts, including pleas in mitigation, bail applications and summary trials. You may also be required to appear as counsel in the District and Supreme Courts, including jury trials, and providing advice and mentoring to staff within ALSWA’s Perth Criminal Law Unit and regional offices.

Whilst based in ALSWA’s Perth office, regular travel to circuit courts at various locations is a requirement. Other responsibilities include weekend court appearances (on a rostered basis).

About you

To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated experience appearing as counsel in criminal matters including the provision of duty lawyer services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substantive law, the rules of evidence and criminal practice and procedure
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team comprising legal and non-legal staff with a willingness to learn and share knowledge with others
  • Highly developed communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal) with experience in conflict resolution
  • Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills.
  • Ability to travel when required
  • You must be able to hold a current WA Practice Certificate
