About Value Engineering Group

BHP’s Value Engineering group was established to identify, maximise, and implement value-adding capability and performance improvement opportunities across the value chain of BHP’s assets.

We are a collaborative team of Data Scientists, data analysts, simulation specialists, and engineers, who combine these skill areas to analyse the end-to-end value chain of BHP’s assets. The analysis aims to identify, evaluate, and recommend opportunities to lift asset capability and performance in the short, medium, and long term. In your day-to-day role, you will be working alongside value analytics and simulation leads, principals, and specialists, using the data and drawing on the knowledge of operations and business subject matter experts linked with BHPs assets to design and track the effectiveness of improvement recommendations.

About the Role

We are currently recruiting for 6 months Secondment/Fixed Term with potential to extend another 6 months.

As a Specialist Data Analyst, you will be part of a global team identifying and delivering performance improvement projects through the application of cutting-edge analytics, operational and engineering expertise. We are looking for multiple roles with varying degree of expertise; hence all applications are welcome.

You will join the Value Analytics team, working collaboratively alongside other Value Engineering specialists, simulation and data analytics professionals, and operations and business subject matter experts to address BHP’s biggest and most complex challenges.

Reporting to Lead Value Analytics, your key focus areas in this role include, but not limited to:

  • Identify business and performance improvement opportunities across the BHP value chain.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure that the relevant business problems are properly defined.
  • Investigate complex problems using a structured problem-solving approach.
  • Write code and conduct analysis utilising a range of technologies and techniques.
  • Enable performance improvement by producing actionable insight from data.
  • Confidently present ideas, results, and recommendations to stakeholders at all organisational levels.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated relevant data science & analytics experience.
  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or analytics-related discipline.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, while maintaining a practical and strategic focus.
  • Have experience programming in Python to:
    • Perform hypothesis tests to support the certainty of findings.
    • Build descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive models.
    • Perform structured and unstructured data mining.
    • Perform dimensionality reduction and feature engineering.
    • Apply machine learning and statistical modelling techniques.
  • Have strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Have experience in project scoping and executing work using a disciplined and structured approach to attain project goals.
  • Have experience in exploring and proposing new ideas that may have benefits for the business.


Other highly regarded experience includes:

  • Practical experience in mining, resources, or similar heavy industry.
  • Experience working in engineering and/or management consulting.
