The OrganisationThe Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) works to conserve Western Australia’s biodiversity, cultural and natural values. The agency also provides world-recognised nature-based tourism and recreation experiences for the community.Our agile and diverse workforce delivers services consistent with DBCA’s strategic priorities, including partnering with Traditional Owners, stakeholders, industry and other agencies.DBCA’s business units include Biodiversity and Conservation Science, Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority, Parks and Wildlife Service, Rottnest Island Authority, Strategy and Governance, and the Zoological Parks Authority. DBCA also supports the work of the Conservation and Parks Commission and the Swan River Trust.The OpportunityWe’re looking for a senior executive with proven leadership skills to work closely with the Director General in reshaping our business to exceed State Government and stakeholder expectations.This is a new, transformational leadership position – for the agency and your career.It is not a narrowly defined corporate role.The Deputy Director General - Strategy and Governance is the agency’s crucial point of interaction between strategic long-term vision and real-time operational excellence.As a key member of our new Corporate Leadership Team, you will guide DBCA’s strategic planning and stakeholder relationships to achieve high-impact outcomes. One of your key responsibilities will be strengthening strategic initiatives around sustainable tourism attractions, flora and fauna conservation, biodiversity restoration and assets managed by DBCA.Your evidence-based insights and contemporary management skills will add value to the breadth of the department’s public-facing services. You will also oversee key internal functions including policy and legislation development, governance, integrity, risk and assurance, organisational reform, data management and corporate and legal services.Dimensions of the Role
  • Responsible for a Department-wide reform program addressing fundamental and significant issues and gaps identified through a range of external reviews and a commitment to build a new strategic plan.
  • Providing advice regularly to the Director General and Ministers on key issues.
  • Management of relationships with key external Public Sector stakeholders, including the Office of Auditor General, Corruption and Crime Commission, Public Sector Commission, and WA Police Force.
  • Cultivating strategic relationships with key stakeholders from the private sector and not-for-profit sector,
  • Reports to the Director General and operates with a high degree of autonomy and deputises for the Director General when required.
