Job description

Deputy Editor – Digital, Print & Events

Hospitality magazine

Sydney-based (Glebe)

Hospitality magazine, Australia’s leading B2B title for the foodservice sector, is looking for a highly organised and motivated journalist to help grow the brand in 2024 and beyond.

Hospitality magazine is the industry’s leading publication that shines a light on the people working within the sector. As Deputy Editor, your job is to share the stories of chefs, front-of-house staff, sommeliers, bartenders, business owners and everyone in between. Whether it’s a profile on a rising culinary star, a feature on the latest pasta bars or a deep-dive into the natural wine category, this position provides an opportunity to tap into one of Australia’s most fast-paced industries.

Reporting into Hospitality’s editor, the successful candidate will create content for the monthly magazine, the accompanying website (hospitalitymagazine.com.au) and weekly newsletters, while also generating content marketing for clients and assisting with the brand’s social media channels. The candidate will also be involved in the running of Hospitality’s annual restaurant conference.

Ideally, you will have two years’ experience in journalism or content marketing. Certainly, you’ll understand how to create lively, engaging content for readers. You will have an eye for detail and a nose for a great story. You will be highly organised and able to manage multiple projects; and since you’ll be dealing with a variety of stakeholders across the hospitality sector, you’ll need excellent interpersonal skills. An understanding of the foodservice sector would be advantageous, although not essential.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and writing news articles and features.
  • Sourcing high-quality images for articles.
  • Interviewing sources and transcribing.
  • Fact-checking and subediting copy.
  • Contributing regular posts to the title’s social media channels while adhering to the company’s social media policy.
  • Liaising with the digital team at Intermedia to support growth and increased engagement of the titles’ online readerships.
  • Liaising with the studio to discuss page design and to ensure production deadlines are met.
  • Proofing pages, making corrections and ensuring all output is accurate and polished and meets production deadlines.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the title, attending relevant functions and press events to boost the profile of the title, source material for news and features and support the sales team as required.
  • Helping to source speakers for the title’s annual conference.
  • Supporting/attending any face-to-face events organised by the publications.
  • Contributing ideas for articles.
  • Some interstate and international travel may be required from time to time.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • An understanding of writing for digital platforms
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of tasks
  • Ability to work among a team as well as independently
  • Willingness to attend some events outside standard working hours
  • Ability to use a personal computer and related software applications
  • Willingness to travel on occasion
  • Knowledge of the hospitality sector would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of InDesign publishing software would be advantageous but is not essential

Other information:

Working hours for this full-time role are 8.30am-5.00pm Monday to Friday, although some evening hours will be required to attend events and to ensure publications hit deadlines. Our office is in Glebe but there will be some flexibility around working from home.

In return, the successful candidate will benefit from being part of one of the leading independent publishers in Australia and can expect a competitive remuneration package, a friendly, supportive environment in which to work and excellent opportunities for professional development.
