Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (OIGIS)

Join the Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (OIGIS), an independent statutory office, which oversees the activities of Australia’s intelligence and security agencies.
 
Contributing to the national interest, OIGIS ensures these agencies act legally and with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines and directives, and respect human rights.
 
The Opportunity

This Deputy Inspector-General role offers more than a leadership position, it's an opportunity to shape, inform and support the work of the agency.

You will have the chance to act for the Inspector-General as required and oversee the growth of this small portfolio agency as its jurisdiction expands, and team grows to roughly 80 staff.
 
The Role

As Deputy Inspector-General, you will assist the Inspector-General to achieve the objects of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1986, review highly complex operational matters and engage with a wide range of stakeholders including members of the Parliament, members of the National Intelligence Community and the public.
 
You will also:  

  • Provide intellectual and principled leadership, and offer strategic and legal advice on complex matters
  • Directly oversee three branches including a regular program of work that inspects activities of intelligence agencies, the provision of legal services, and the provision of all Enterprise Management functions
  • Act for the Inspector-General and undertake work under their direction
  • Represent the Inspector-General at external committees and forums
The Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate, you demonstrate high level leadership and critical analysis capabilities, with outstanding judgement.
 
You have high standards of ethical behaviour and pride yourself on your ability to demonstrate APS Values. Ideally you have the following skills/experience: 

  • Worked in senior executive roles before, ideally within complex or highly sensitive operating environments
  • Legal qualifications and extensive experience working in a relevant legal field
  • Hold an unrestricted practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one), in the ACT 
It is highly desirable if you have led significant organisational and cultural change and have extensive experience in national security law and policy, and legislative reform.
 
You must be an Australian citizen willing to undergo a background check to be successful for this role. Appointment and ongoing employment within the agency are subject to a Positive Vetting clearance being granted and maintained.
