This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024

Halls Head College Education Support Centre (ESC) is seeking a dedicated Deputy Principal join our leadership team.

The Deputy Principal will provide support to the Principal, as part of the Executive leadership team and have a portfolio in managing the daily operations of a diverse and complex secondary Education Support Centre. 

The Deputy will also support teaching staff to develop and deliver personalised learning plans, that ensure for literacy, numeracy and social skills development and a range of collaboratively developed strategies in response to individual needs.  The Deputy Principal should have a deep understanding of the functions of student behaviour in the context of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability and trauma and with appropriate qualifications in education support. The ability to be an effective communicator and be able to build strong positive relationships with students and families under difficult circumstances is highly desirable.

The successful applicant should be able to drive the implementation a Positive Education approach across the school and have the ability to mentor and lead staff in the Positive Behaviour Support processes. The position requires someone who is confident and knowledgeable in undertaking leadership of curriculum development, school operations, staff professional development and development of programs to improve student outcomes in accordance with school planning directions and Department of Education (DOE) priorities.

The successful applicant will ideally have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills across all areas of the school community. Duties may include mentoring and developing staff skills, coordinating and implementing school operational processes, liaising with parents/carers of students at risk and behaviour management. The Deputy Principal provides educational leadership in the school and the community by helping develop and promote the school values, ethos and priorities, and encouraging staff, volunteers from the community, and others, to share ownership of the school’s vision and goals.

Halls Head College ESC is a vibrant, caring and successful, small school for students with disabilities. We share a site with Halls Head College and provide a quality educational experience for all of our students, providing personal learning plans and pathways to ensure that each student will progress, purposefully, towards their own potential.

We are an Independent Public School who cater for students from Year 7 to Year 10 with an intellectual disability and a need for the educational services that we provide. Our students are drawn from the Mandurah area and as far north as Golden Bay, south to Waroona and east to Pinjarra. We enrol students needing intensive support to achieve their educational and or behavioural goals.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
