About Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) The newly created entity of Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) is the amalgamation of the Volunteer Marine Rescue and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard. The MRQ has a mission to provide a state-wide boating safety network, with a responsibility to both respond to situations and educate the boating public while supporting emergency service agencies during disaster and emergency events and other organisations for routine tasks.
Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) is a marine emergency service dedicated to protecting the safety of the Queensland boating community. Marine Rescue Queensland, established in 2024 is Queensland's first single integrated state-wide service, serving the state's coastline and waterways. In this role, you will be part of the newly established Marine Rescue Queensland Unit and support work associated with the blue water rescue capability, dedicated to protecting Queenslanders in our oceans and waterways.

About the Role and You Reporting to the newly appointed Chief Officer, Marine Rescue Queensland this critical role will form the backbone of the organisation as it ramps up to full operational capacity. Major areas of responsibility will include:
Strategic planning - Provide strategic direction to develop innovative cross-sectoral partnership strategies, enhancing the capacity and preparedness of marine rescue and disaster management services. Lead and manage the delivery of cross-sectoral initiatives, research, and service models to improve emergency, safety, preparedness, mitigation, and response services across Queensland.
Capacity Building and Governance - Develop strategies to improve relationships between government and non-government agencies. Strengthen planning, risk, and performance management to deliver high-quality community safety services.
Strategic advice and community education - Offer high-level strategic advice to promote community education and awareness of best practices for hazard and risk responses. Develop and maintain strong partnerships across sectors to foster commitment and cooperation in community safety and emergency management.
Representation and negotiation - Represent MRQ at high-level meetings, managing liaison and coordination with key government and non-government agencies to build awareness and strengthen emergency preparedness and responses.
Professional and ethical standards - Establish professional and ethical working relationships, engaging in risk management activities to promote corporate governance and a robust prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery approach. Manage human, financial, and physical resources to ensure a culture of community service and performance management. Promote a work environment that is accountable, fair, and safe, while encouraging innovation, learning, and effective linkages across policy, research, evaluation, and reporting systems.
We’re looking for a passionate leader, who operates with a solution-focused approach, as well as collaboration, influence, and empathy. Ideally, the successful applicant will have formal marine qualifications and demonstrated experience in planning, coordinating, and managing maritime services, more specifically concerning community and maritime safety.
