The Department of Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water (DCCEEW) leads Australia's response to climate change and sustainable energy use, and the protection of our environment heritage and water. Working with others, we help identify, protect, conserve and celebrate Australia's significant natural, Indigenous and historic heritage.
The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) is a specialist scientific area within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth). We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process and develop standards and practices for environmental protection. The Science Facilitation Team provides high quality business, operational and governance support to the OSS, including WHS and the coordination of our statutory committees.
The Job
  • Participate as a member of the OSS Senior Management Team and provide high level leadership to the Science Facilitation Team.
  • Oversee the operations of the Jabiru Field Station.
  • Oversee the implementation of the OSS WHS Management System ensuring compliance and integration with relevant Departmental processes and policies.
  • Manage OSS facilities including laboratories, housing, vehicles, boats and ATVs in collaboration with central property and security functions.
  • Manage the OSS staffing, operational and capital budget, including budget build, ongoing budget tracking and ensuring a high level of compliance with financial requirements.
  • Manage the OSS policy functions and coordinate the provision of advice, through the Supervising Scientist, to relevant Ministers, the departmental executive, external agencies and non-government groups, including ministerial and executive briefings and high-level policy and coordination tasks.
  • Oversee the OSS communications activities including implementation of the communication strategy, production of the Annual Technical Report, statutory reports, plain English explanatory material and indigenous communications products.
  • Manage the coordination of the statutory Alligator Rivers Region Advisory Committee and the Alligator Rivers Region Technical Committee.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading teams to build a supportive, collaborative, inclusive and resilient culture through coaching, mentoring, and supporting staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing the implementation and maintenance of WHS management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing operational and capital budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilities management including asset management and management of remote sites.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating the development and publication of complex reports.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining corporate governance systems.
