-You can view and print these PDF attachments by downloading .This recruitment pool will run for a period of twelve (12) months and may be used to fill permanent opportunities as they arise.To be Eligible to apply for the position, you must be employed as a Prison Officer or Vocational Support Officer within the Department of Justice as defined in the Prisons Act 1981.Currently there is one permanent position available for immediate filling at a regional posting.ABOUT THE ROLEThe Drug Detection Unit (DDU) contributes to the safe, secure and efficient operation of custodial facilities by utilising detection dogs and other technologies to deter, detect and disrupt illegal drugs and other contraband entering custodial facilities.The Drug Detection Officer (DDO) is responsible for:

  • Conducting searches of individuals, environments and property with a detection dog or other Drug Detection technology.
  • The full care, fitness and welfare of a detection dog during its working life including the provision of a healthy and secure property/home environment.
  • Responsibility for the operational effectiveness and ongoing maintenance of their detection dog.
  • Conducting ongoing use, trials and research of Drug Detection technology.

Successful applicants appointed from a pool will be subject to a 9-month probationary period as a Drug Detection Officer. During probation successful applicants must undertake the necessary mandatory training programs and pass relevant assessments as prescribed by the Drug Detection Unit to the required standards.Pool RecruitmentThis pool will be open for a period of 12 months from the day after the breach of standard claim period closes. Permanent, full time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise; however, an appointment is not guaranteed.The Department of Justice uses recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities.   • Be employed as a Prison Officer or Vocational Support Officer within the Department of Justice as defined in the Prisons Act 1981
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or have permanent residency status within Australia
  • Possess a valid C-Class driver’s licence
  • Possess a “Provide First Aid” qualification, which at the time of appointment must have 9 months validity remaining
  • Obtain clearance through the Department’s criminal history and integrity screening assessment process
  • Applicants must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position
  • The willingness and ability to travel intrastate by airplane with or without a dog.
