PRINCIPAL ECOLOGIST – QLD Based (Townsville)

About the role:

  • Supervising and mentoring staff across a broad range of related projects
  • Provide Biodiversity Australia with an understanding of government legislation, particularly relating to ecology
  • Compile, edit and review scientific documents for clients, and legislation driven applications, permits and reporting
  • Developing and submitting proposals and tenders to the Biodiversity Australia standard
  • Responsible for driving business development with new and existing clients
  • Ensure projects are coordinated in a timely and financially-appropriate manner to both internal and external client expectations
  • Plan resource requests in advance of requirement


To be successful you will have: 

  • 10yrs+ experience 
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in ecology, zoology and/or natural resource management
  • Demonstrated experience in ecological assessments and reporting
  • Experience coordinating staff including rostering, performance management etc
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to utilise a variety of computer programs and IT applications
  • Proficient in field-based scientific survey and data collection in particular Regional Eco System verification, TEC verification and BioCondition
  • Proficient in office-based research, data compilation and reporting
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving capability

SENIOR ECOLOGIST - Multiple roles available 

About the role: 

  • Get out and about undertaking field work as required with opportunities to travel across greater Queensland region and Australia
  • Extensive range of projects throughout Australia
  • Maintain professional relationships with clients from across the resources and infrastructure, government and defence, residential and aviation sectors
  • Lead and mentor field Ecologists and Fauna field team members and use your expert knowledge to support the Ecology division
  • Manage Ecological projects from initial scope and client liaison, field flora and fauna surveys through to commercial delivery
  • Preparation of research, analysis, field surveys, impact assessments, approvals and technical reports
  • Assist with preparation of submissions and proposals
  • Maintaining an understanding of commonwealth, state and local government environmental regulations and their application as well as relevant industry standards, practices, and approvals processes

    To be successful you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Ecology, Zoology, and/or Natural Resource Management or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years postgraduate experience in a relevant field is desirable
  • Working knowledge of consulting practice plus extensive project management skills
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing, submitting, and managing specialist biological assessment reports
  • Previous Team Leading or Management experience if expressed interest for a Team Leader opportunity
  • You must have the ability and willingness to undertake field work when required
  • Current drivers licence, White Card and First Aid Certificate
  • Ideally be based on the East Coast of Australia, with a convenient location to airport 

ECOLOGIST - multiple roles available

About the role: 

  • As the Ecologist, you will conduct field ecology activities and be the knowledge expert in field ecology related activities throughout the division 
  • Opportunities may arise for you to work across the greater Queensland region and Australia where your skills are required, and depending on your achievement of expectations, your role with Biodiversity Australia could have significant long term career growth.

To be successful you will have: 

  • Tertiary qualification in Ecology, Zoology, and/or Natural Resource Management or equivalent Preparation of research, analysis, field surveys, impact assessments, approvals and technical reports
  • Minimum 3 years postgraduate experience in a relevant field is desirable

GEOSPATIAL COORDINATOR - multiple roles available 

About the role: 
Biodiversity Australia is seeking motivated early-career geospatial coordinators to join our newly formed Geospatial Modelling Unit. This position presents an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about geospatial analysis to make meaningful contributions to impactful environmental projects and gain valuable hands-on experience.


To be successful you will have: 

  • You have a strong interest in geospatial analysis, modelling, and programming
  • You hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in GIS, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Proficiency in GIS software, including ArcGIS (and AGOL), QGIS, and experience with data analysis and visualisations
  • You have a basic understanding of programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, and Arcade Expressions or a willingness to learn
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills are second nature to you
  • Excellent communication skills allow you to collaborate effectively with team members and present analysis findings to stakeholders
  • You are eager to stay updated with the latest advancements in geospatial technology and apply new techniques to project workflows
  • Collaborate with the Geospatial Modelling Unit to conduct geospatial analysis, modelling, and visualisations for environmental assessments, land management, and other related projects
  • Assist in managing data quality control processes and ensuring the integrity of spatial databases
  • Contribute to developing and implementing innovative geospatial solutions for complex environmental challenges
  • Utilise ArcGIS, QGIS, and other software to perform analysis and create geospatial products
  • Employ mobile data management tools such as ArcGIS Field Maps or Survey123 for efficient data collection and management in the field
  • Prepare technical reports, maps, and deliverables that effectively communicate analysis findings
  • Gain exposure to drone mapping software like DJI Terra, assisting in processing aerial imagery for mapping and modelling purposes
  • Contribute to the development of interactive web applications using Geocortex or similar platforms
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in geospatial technology, incorporating new tools and techniques into project workflows
  • Ideally be based on the East Coast of Australia, with a convenient location to airport
