Job description

Our Ecology service in WA is growing! We’re looking for an exceptional person to lead, develop and grow our team of passionate and experienced ecologists to continue to deliver high quality botanical and zoological assessments to our clients.

This is a new role within the WA leadership team and is one of three State Leads across our main service areas: Ecology, Environmental Assessments & Approvals and Contaminated Land Management. Our exciting opportunity will provide the right candidate with a great platform to apply their leadership and technical skills whilst building this growing function at JBS&G.

The role

Reporting to the Regional Manager (WA & NT), the role will be responsible for leading and growing our Ecology Service Area. We are seeking candidates with demonstrated leadership attributes and experience leading teams and at least 10 years’ experience undertaking (or leading) botanical and ecological assessments in WA.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing team leadership and pastoral care to develop, guide, mentor and grow the team.
  • Overseeing the success of the team ensuring exceptional outcomes are achieved for our clients.
  • Achieving service growth targets based on the defined strategy.
  • Providing insightful input and market analytics to operational planning and marketing activities.
  • Overseeing the design and conduct of ecological surveys (flora & vegetation, fauna & habitat assessments) and monitoring.
  • Managing client relationships, projects, budgets and timelines.
  • Preparing and/or reviewing ecological reports and providing technical advice and input on impact assessments.
  • Engaging with Agencies and stakeholders.

You will be mostly office based in our new Perth CBD premises with occasional field work servicing both long term and new clients in the metro region and the Pilbara, Southwest and Midwest regions.

You will bring the right level of leadership and technical expertise and:

• A tertiary qualification (botany, zoology, conservation biology, environmental science or equivalent).

• A collaborative, impactful, safe and supportive leadership and working style.

• Ability to build and retain a strong culture through effectively leading people.

• Commercial acumen relating to consulting, project management and business development.

• Ability to lead by example and demonstrate a strong sense of integrity, ethics and dependability.

• Proven ability to manage talent processes and risks.

• In-depth knowledge of the environmental consultancy market and sectors, and key skills and attributes employees will require to work in the industry.

• Strategic thinking, planning and creative problem-solving skills.

• Ability to plan and achieve company strategic growth goals.

• Ability to work effectively under pressure.

• Excellent and accurate reporting writing and communication skills.

• A willingness to do fieldwork from time to time.

• Experience in key legislation (e.g. EPBC Act, EP Act WA, BC Act WA) and relevant agency (EPA, DCCEEW, DBCA) guidelines

• Holder of a current WA ‘C’ Class Driver’s License.

• GIS skills/experience highly desirable but not essential.
