This is a nine (9) month fixed term, part-time (0.4FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2024 with possible extension (12 months) and/or permanency
School Of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEN:S) is seeking an Education Assistant (EA) – Auslan to join their team.
Our School
The School provides educational support for children with a hearing loss and/or vision impairment from birth to completion of school. SSEN: S is based at the Statewide Services Centre in Padbury and supports children in both public and non-government schools throughout Western Australia.
SSEN: S operates the Deaf Education and Vision Education programs to support eligible children, their schools and families. SSEN: S employs teachers with specialist skills and other specialist staff such as educational audiologists, school psychologists, braille transcribers, Deaf education officers, captioners and educational interpreters.
SSEN: S staff benefit from working in a cohesive and collaborative team environment, sharing common goals and resources in supporting students, schools and parents across a state-wide service. SSEN:S provides opportunities to work state-wide with the provision of current and regular professional learning events, an induction and mentoring program for new and returning staff, and the opportunity to work in an environment of best practice which encourages innovative input of ideas from staff.
The Role
The EA – Auslan will assist teachers in delivering planned education programs in both individual and small group settings, supporting children from birth to completion of school. You will also facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students, teachers, and other staff. Additionally, the role may involve interpreting for Deaf staff members in the workplace. The successful applicant will also assist in supervising students, as well as participate in a team situation, and consult and provide feedback regarding students’ progress.
It is highly desirable that applicants have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter and/or hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting. An understanding of Deaf culture and active participation in the Deaf community is also highly desirable.
The role operates across SSEN: S Services and may require travel across hubs, schools and Early Childhood sites based at Southwell Primary School and Statewide Services Centre in Padbury. It is highly desirable that the successful applicant hold a current and valid ‘C' class driver’s licence. The role may also involve travel to regional areas, which may require overnight stays.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Well developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
  • Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting (Paraprofessional/Professional) and/or NAATI Accreditation or have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.
