Creaney Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2025.

Education Assistants - Special Needs support the teaching staff in the planning and implementing of engaging, challenging and supportive learning programs that give every student the opportunity to succeed.

As an Education Assistant - Special Needs, you should, under general supervision and guidance, perform tasks that require discretion and judgement in achieving clearly defined outcomes for students as determined by the teacher. You should apply techniques, skills and knowledge of relevant principles and practices acquired through previous experience, on the job learning or relevant qualifications. Suitable applicants should be responsible for modifying resources to meet the specific needs of individual and groups of students. This may include collecting and reporting data on student achievement and behaviour in accordance with documented plans. You will ideally play a key role in the case management approach to student support services.

Suitable applicants should be effective team players and good communicators. Ideally you should possess excellent time management skills and ability to work with a variety of teachers and students throughout the day. We are seeking Education Assistants - Special Needs who are skilled in the preparation of the learning environment and learning tasks.

Our school's priority is to provide a balanced curriculum that caters for a student's academic, physical, social and emotional needs. This means developing the required knowledge, skills and values through targeted literacy and numeracy programs, as well as through technology, science, social science, specialist and pastoral care programs. We aim to provide the necessary building blocks for our students to reach their potential, to become good citizens and to make a valuable contribution to society.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with Special Needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.
