Appointment Pool

Grandis Primary School is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.

Education Assistants are highly valued at our school and are asked to support the teaching and learning of students through assisting the teacher in delivering planned education programs with a particular focus on literacy, numeracy, play and social skills. Suitable applicants should be able to help in the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment and care for and supervise students in and out of class. Our Special NeedsEducation Assistants may be offered positions in a classroom, small group or individual student support setting.

As a Special NeedsEducation Assistant, you should participate in professional learning opportunities to further build your skills and knowledge. In joining our dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching staff, you should be willing to contribute to and work as part of this team and display a commitment to working collaboratively and building positive relationships with students, parents, staff and the wider community.

The ability to be flexible, exercise initiative and work as part of a team will be highly advantageous. Suitable applicants should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate with teachers to create and maintain a supportive, inclusive education program to meet the specific needs of the students. A clear understanding and knowledge of strategies to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, intellectual disabilities, high level physical and medical needs, anxiety disorders, behaviour support and sensory integration issues is highly desirable. Experience in delivering the Sounds-Write program, Reading Mastery, Spelling Mastery and tailored intervention sessions would enhance the applicant’s suitability to the positions.

As a professional learning community, the fundamental purpose of Grandis Primary School is to assist all students to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviour essential to their success in life. Our school is a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) school and experience in the processes that support a PBS school would be advantageous.

The school is situated on Grandis Boulevard in Banksia Grove. The school includes five teaching blocks, administration area, playgrounds, undercover area, library, dental therapy centre as well as multi-purpose courts and an oval which are shared with the City of Wanneroo.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with Special Needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
