The Role

The future of Australia’s Defence begins here. You will join teams working to advance Australia’s military space capabilities, and enhance collaboration with our Allies and the Australian space industry. Defence Space Command is looking for experienced Project Managers to work within the Space Capability Branch.

The role is supporting space capability development, within the Space Domain Support Office (SDSO) engaging with other space-related programs across Defence, and other Government agencies to ensure optimisation of Defence space capabilities. 

You will have in-depth knowledge of the Project Management function and are responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to the work within this function. The role leads a collaborative approach with stakeholders to maximise the overall capability effect and progress approvals through senior committees. 

This role is accountable for the implementation of program and project governance, business and commercial support, which will contribute to the measure of quality performance and compliance against established standards.

The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP), which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA).  
This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review.

Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised prior your BDCP additional payment will cease.

About our Team
The Space Capability Branch is responsible for space capability development and management, delivering space control, space domain awareness and space services capabilities for Defence. The branch coordinates space-related capability programs across the domain, including coordination of standards, governance, certifications and space worthiness requirements for capability programs.

Our Ideal Candidate
These roles are part of the SDSO, supporting capability activities within the Defence Space Domain. The successful candidates will demonstrate seasoned leadership skills and experience in project implementation. 

The successful candidates will be expected to understand the broader context of the Defence organisation and its operational domains. The SDSO supports the Space Capability Branch at a program level.

The ideal candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • People leadership experience;
  • Strong business acumen and commercial experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to shifting priorities and compressed timelines;
  • An outcomes-based approach to resolving issues; 
  • Building and maintaining positive team and stakeholder relationships; and
  • Outstanding communication skills.
