The Role

The Director APS Workplace Relations leads a team responsible for managing a range of complex 
industrial and employment matters within the Defence portfolio. 

The Director maintains a strong professional network with central agencies and key stakeholders and leads the development of accurate, timely employment policy advice to the Defence senior leadership team and Ministers.

To be a strong contender you will have demonstrated knowledge of employment legislation and a 
proven track record in industrial relations including negotiation and representation at a national level.

As the Director of APS Workplace Relations you will:

  • Encourage innovation and actively develop the capability and confidence of your team to communicate effectively and with influence;
  • Have the ability to distil complex, industrial information and legal proposals into clear and concise language appropriate for a range of internal and external audiences;

  • An influential communicator with sound judgement;
  • Have demonstrated experience in collaborating to achieve quality outcomes.

About our Team
The Directorate of APS Workplace Relations within Defence People Group, is responsible for 
managing the industrial framework and employment policies and advice for APS within the Defence 
portfolio.

This includes development and management of individual and collective industrial matters and 
disputes and the development of workplace agreements for SES and non-SES APS employees.

The Director plays a key role in the People Policy and Employment Conditions Branch leadership 
team. The members of the Directorate you will lead are located primarily in Canberra.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate has:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing Australian Workplace Relations including negotiation of agreements and representation at a national level;
  • Detailed knowledge of employment legislation and ability to manage Workplace Relations issues in the context of a large public sector organisation;
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in achieving outcomes;
  • Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to translate information in a clear, concise manner and develop briefing material for a wide variety of audiences;
  • A track record in effectively leading and developing a high performing team, managing a number of dynamic, competing priorities to achieve results;
  • Enthusiasm for continuous improvement in both policy and business processes, with the ability to motivate others and drive change;
  • Demonstrated experience in exercising strong strategic judgement, providing expert and timely advice to enable senior decision making.
