The Role
EL1 Cloud Automation Engineer
The Cloud Engineering Lead will be responsible for managing automated configuration and management tools for one or more enterprise cloud platforms, and will have a number of Cloud Engineers directly reporting to them to support delivery and sustainment. The lead role will directly engage with Directors, Technical Directors and Cloud Solution Architects to identify, prioritise and deliver platform solutions in support of ASD capability.
They will work closely with the engineering teams and platform stakeholders to ensure the platform is meeting business requirements and functional specifications, including ongoing sustainment and technical feasibility of the platform. The Engineering Lead will be responsible for ensuring the platform offering is in line with enterprise service management and change processes.
- Plan, lead and manage cloud infrastructure, using tools like AWS Cloud Formation, Terraform, or Ansible.
- Manage cloud resources such as virtual networks, storage, compute instances, and databases.
- Designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to automate the testing, deployment, and monitoring of applications.
- Utilizing tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, or AWS Code Pipeline to streamline development workflows.
- Responding to incidents and troubleshooting issues related to cloud infrastructure.
- Performing root cause analysis and implementing preventive measures to avoid future incidents.
- Accountable for managing and leading a team, including providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people.
- Ensuring compliance with national security regulations and standards such as the Information Security Registered Assessors Program (IRAP).
- Ensuring that cloud infrastructure complies with security standards and regulations, such as the Information Security Manual (ISM) and the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
- Ensuring cloud infrastructure adheres to governance policies and compliance requirements.
- Implementing policies and controls for data protection and privacy.
- Ensuring secure and efficient network communication within and across cloud environments.
- Providing support and guidance to developers and other team members on cloud best practices.

Our ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in delivering ICT solutions across hybrid and commercial cloud
- Experience in network & system engineering
- Knowledge of Cloud Frameworks
- People & Workforce management
- Ensuring compliance with national security regulations
- Writing scripts in languages for automation of tasks as required
- Designing and maintaining pipelines to automate testing, deployment and monitoring
- Designing robust, scalable, and secure cloud architectures that meet the unique requirements of ASD.
- Ability to contribute to project planning efforts, advocate governance and approval processes.
- Ability to fulfil supervisory duties including proactively developing and mentoring the cloud engineering workforce.
EL1 Cloud Infrastructure Engineer
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in delivering ICT solutions across hybrid and commercial cloud
- Commercial cloud certifications desired
- Experience in network & system engineering
- Knowledge of Cloud Frameworks
- People & Workforce management
- Provisioning cloud infrastructure using relevant ASD tools
- Automating infrastructure deployment and management tasks through scripting
- Ensuring cloud infrastructure adheres to governance policies and compliance requirements
- Configuring and managing cloud networking components
- Extensive experience in managing ICT hosting or cloud platforms
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex problems to management
- Ability to contribute to project planning efforts, advocate governance and approval processes.
- Ability to fulfil supervisory duties including proactively developing and mentoring the cloud-engineering workforce.
