Electorate Officer/ Communications (Grade 2)
Will Fowles, Member for Ringwood
We are seeking a highly motivated, personable and organised individual to join Will's electorate team.
About the Role Electorate Officers play an important role in providing services to the Victorian community. Reporting to the Member of Parliament that nominates you, your work will require a high degree of trust and integrity. Confidentiality is also a key requirement when interacting with constituents and visitors to the office or in the community.
Based in the Member of Parliament's electorate office, you will interact daily with constituents, community organisations and other stakeholders. Key responsibilities may include:
Manage and maintain digital communications including website, social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube) and electronic direct mail;
Research and draft local media releases, parliamentary speeches, electorate newsletters, and digital communications;
Prepare written responses on behalf of the Member on a diverse range of matters of varying complexity.
Achieve positive outcomes for constituents through appropriate advocacy and representation
Organise electorate events, functions, briefings and meetings;
Draft, design, arrange printing and distribution of electorate communications including newsletters, brochures and direct mail;
Develop and execute multifaceted community campaigns;
Manage constituent database systems;
General administration and office management
Constituent services
Media and stakeholder engagement
Parliamentary duties
While Members of Parliament are prohibited from determining that an Electorate Officer can or must perform work that is party specific, Members typically nominate Electorate Officer whose political beliefs are closely aligned with their own. Section 27 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 states that an employer may discriminate on the basis of political belief or activity in the offering of employment to an Electorate Officer. Under Section 30 of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005 Electorate Officers must not perform any party specific activities. Party specific activity means any activity for the dominant purpose of directing how a person should vote at an election, by promoting or opposing the election of any candidate at the election; or a registered political party; or an elected member.

The role of an Electorate Officer requires you to demonstrate:
Initiative and organisational ability, particularly working autonomously to determine priorities and perform a broad range of office support duties, often to tight and demanding deadlines.
Sound written and oral communication skills with a proven ability to undertake research and prepare written materials including reports, submissions, and correspondence.
Excellent computer skills with experience in MS suite of software and use and maintenance of online communications.
Commitment and ability to provide the highest level of client service in a challenging environment, providing sound advice and maintaining the strictest confidence on all issues.
Strong knowledge of, and ability to provide advice and guidance on, government and parliamentary processes.
Strong knowledge of traditional and social media landscape with ability to maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets; and provide advice in a rapidly changing external policy and political environment.
Ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders from government and peak organisations to local community organisations and constituents.
Ability to evaluate work procedures, practices, and systems and to implement change.
Sound coaching and mentoring skills with ability to support other staff in a team environment, provide direction where required and respect the needs of others.

Salary and hours of work
Electorate Officer salaries are set out in the Electorate Officers (Victoria) Single Enterprise Agreement 2021.
Grade 2: $81,832 per annum plus 11% employer superannuation.
We are offering either full time and/or part time with flexibility to days of work for part time. The ordinary hours of work will be between 9am to 5pm Monday – Friday.
A six-month probationary period will apply.
Pre-Employment Screening requirements
All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory National Name (Police) Check and Working with Children Check. Successful candidates who do not currently hold a Working with Children Check will be required to obtain a check within 3 months of commencement of employment.
