ASIC's purpose

ASIC has a broad remit, regulating corporations, markets, financial services and consumer credit, and monitors and promotes market integrity and consumer protection in the Australian financial system.

In 2022-23 ASIC commenced more than 130 new investigations and its enforcement actions resulted in 35 criminal convictions and almost $190 million in civil penalties and fines imposed by the courts.

Through our enforcement work, we hold to account those who contravene the law, working to achieve strong outcomes that address the greatest consumer and investor harms.

A future with ASIC means that your work will contribute to ASIC's vision for a fair, strong and efficient financial system for all Australians, with the opportunity to work on matters relating to ASIC's enforcement priorities, including greenwashing, poorly designed investment products, scam prevention and predatory lending practices in Australian businesses.

Our Team

ASIC is committed to providing a diverse and inclusive workplace and welcomes and encourages applications from First Nations people, people with disability and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

ASIC's Enforcement and Compliance Group (ECG) is responsible for the conduct of ASIC's initial inquiries, compliance and enforcement work across all sectors. The ECG comprises a number of teams, including Investigation and Enforcement Action Teams.

This recruitment process will establish a pool of lawyers to fill current and future vacancies in our Investigation and Enforcement Action Teams.

What you will bring to ASIC

As a Lawyer, you will contribute to investigations of suspected misconduct, including obtaining enforcement outcomes by way of civil, criminal or administrative action. More specifically, you will:

  • Work on a variety of matters as part of multi-disciplinary enforcement teams.
  • Contribute to the preparation of matters in court, including compiling criminal and civil briefs, and drafting legal documents, including pleadings and affidavits.
  • Undertake legal research and provide legal advice on aspects of ECG's work, including interpretation and application of the law.
  • Provide legal support to senior lawyers, investigators and broader investigation teams.
  • Employ a range of evidence gathering techniques, including conducting examinations, interviewing witnesses, taking witness statements, issuing notices and  reviewing documents using evidence management technology and other systems.
  • Derive insights from data, information and documents, and compile them into relevant evidence, chronologies and evidence matrices.
  • Contribute to the conduct of criminal and civil litigation in State and Federal Courts.
  • Participate in investigation planning.

About you

The ideal candidate will possess an inquisitive and analytical mindset and will be comfortable working with complex information in a changing environment. You will be proactive and outcome-driven, with the ability to see how your work contributes to the bigger picture. With a consultative and collaborative interpersonal style, you will enjoy working as part of a large, multi-skilled team.

You'll be experienced in juggling priorities and be an articulate communicator who has excellent writing skills. You will also be adept at interrogating and evaluating information using a variety of techniques.

You will be passionate about using your legal skills to make a positive difference for investors and consumers in the Australian financial system.

Experience in the conduct of civil or criminal litigation matters will be well regarded.

You must hold a current practicing certificate.

ASIC invests in its people and values a strong cultural environment. Benefits for you include:

  • Professional development opportunities, including mentoring programs and on-going training.
  • Flexible working options, including the ability to work remotely and access to flex-time.
  • Four weeks' annual leave, plus additional paid leave during the Christmas closedown.
  • A supportive culture where we celebrate wins and express appreciation.
