About the RoleGSHS’s Graduate Nurse Program is a unique and exciting program giving first year Enrolled Nurses exposure to a diverse range of clinical experiences within a rural health service. Our program aims to assist you to develop the critical thinking, time management and practical skills required to consolidate your practice as an Enrolled Nurse within a positive and supportive team environment.
The Graduate Nurse Program will provide:
- Assistance and support from preceptors and other experienced enrolled and registered nurses.
- Collaboration with other health care professionals in order to promote an integrated approach to health care delivery.
- Further development of collaborative and communication skills.
- Active participation in an ongoing education program incorporating clinical learning, learning packages and study days.
- Access to in-service education programs.
- Active participation in ongoing performance development and review processes.
- Participation in the delivery of patient care in a rural setting.
Two days of orientation, plus a further four study days have been allocated for the 2024 GNP to support you in transitioning into the workforce.
The Study Day topics covered are designed to consolidate and further expand the graduate nurse’s knowledge base and to assist the graduates to apply theory to clinical practice.
At GSHS graduates undertake two (3) clinical rotations. One will be a general nursing placement, General Ward or Multi-Function Ward and the other two placements will be in aged care (Koorooman, Alchera or Hillside).
The rotations are intended to provide the graduate EN with a balance between consolidation and a variety of experiences on which to base career choices.
During your rotations you are allocated preceptors who are keen to give their experience and expertise to assist you.
Your preceptor will provide valuable clinical support in the GNP and offer an important contribution to your ongoing nursing knowledge and skills base.

This opportunity will be provided and we encourage each graduate to complete a graduate evaluation survey at the end of your GNP.
About YouThe successful applicant should possess the following:
- Actively seek clinical support when undertaking unfamiliar procedures or in caring for patients requiring complex care
- Actively participate in learning and development opportunities. Attendance at study days, completion of on-line and practical competencies and also mandatory learning packages are a requirement for a successful completion of the graduate year
- Notify the appropriate ward/department of your inability to attend any shifts and study days as soon as possible
- Notify the appropriate ward/department and the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator of inability to attend any study days as soon as possible
- Complete clinical objectives allocated for each clinical rotation
- Complete packages and clinical objectives in a timely and thorough manner
- Take responsibility and accountability for your own learning
- Actively seek feedback as part of your scheduled performance management review and on an ongoing basis
- Participate in the evaluation of the Graduate Nurse Program on completion
Staff have access to supportive staff mentoring, education and development programs. Salary Packaging is available for all staff. The successful applicant will be required to provide a current satisfactory police check and NDIS Worker Screening Check.
