Job description

UGL's Utilities business provides essential projects and services for critical infrastructure across the water and power sectors. Ranging from wastewater treatment plants to power stations, Utilities provide an end-to-end offering from concept design through to operations and maintenance.

Our offerings include design, construct, commission, operate and maintain across the following capabilities: Power generation, Transmission lines, Substations, Electrical distribution, Water and wastewater treatment. The Utilities business are the preferred contractor on two of the largest energy infrastructure projects within the Australian energy sector, one of these projects is located in Queensland and the other in New South Wales. These two exciting opportunities secure a pipeline of work until 2027 and include the design & construction of new transmission lines and substations.

Reporting to the HSE Operations manager, the purpose of the Environmental Manager is focused on the provision of advice and support to the to the Utilities line of business, with a concentrate on driving improvements in Environmental performance by leveraging UGL's HSEQ Strategy, HSEQ Management System, Assurance Program, and One HSE Culture Program.

About the role

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Environmental strategy in alignment with the overall Utilities business strategy.
  • Attract, lead, and coach a team of Environmental professionals across multiple projects
  • Manage the development of project documentation and obtaining relevant environmental, planning and regulatory approvals and permits
  • Coordinate and engage with cross functional teams and stakeholders to ensure the timely management and mitigation of approvals risk for effective project commencement.
  • Build on pre-established relationships at Federal, State and local Government levels within NSW to meet environmental project requirements
  • Continuously monitoring changes in Regulations, public policy, approval conditions and industry practice to ensure the projects continues to meet its compliance obligations
  • Actively engage the Leadership and Project teams to discuss how Environmental outcomes are being achieved and assist with addressing gaps where identified
  • Monitor and report on achievement of Environmental KPI's for the business working with the leadership team to address any identified deficiencies.
  • Monitor alignment with legal and client obligations, providing advice to the Leadership team and projects/sites on changes or emerging trends that could impact the successful delivery of work
  • Respond to business development opportunities, including involvement in Tender responses and Gate Processes to embed Environmental expectations early in the project lifecycle.

About you

  • Qualified in HSEQ or related field supported by solid experience in a managing a HSEQ function within a major construction environment or heavy industry is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of the relevant HSE legislation including environmental approval requirements for construction projects
  • Demonstrated capability in implementing HSEQ improvement programs/strategies
  • Experience in leading incident investigations for significant events.
  • Can demonstrate a knowledge of various commercial agreement strategies and it the indirect relationship they have on HSEQ management.
  • Experience in developing high performance teams involving multiple disciplines
  • Solid Influencing skills and the ability to achieve outcomes in an environment of managing complex stakeholder relationships, including key business partners
