Broome Youth and Families Hub has an interesting and challenging role available for an Experienced Counsellor. We’re seeking a suitably qualified and flexible individual to work from our Drop In centre. The right candidate will engage with clients across our whole suite of programs, including those involved with Home Stretch, Target 120 and Reconnect. They’ll build rapport with our children, young people and families by participating in BYFH’s activities — at the Drop In centre, in the community and on-country—thus increasing the likelihood of our clients accessing and engaging in therapeutic intervention. This role has been developed in response to a gap in our Broome community: there are often long wait times for children, young people and families to access therapeutic counselling support services and there’s a growing need for mental health support.

With this gap in mind, this is not a boots-on-the-desk kind of job! We’re not looking for someone who will stay squirreled away in their office, seeing clients only by appointment. This is a job for someone with brilliant people skills—someone who can be on-hand for incidental counselling, ready for crises counselling, and who can deliver workshops to our clients on areas such as anger management, conflict resolution and problem solving. Our ideal candidate will be able to operate both autonomously and collaboratively to ensure our clients receive the best service possible.

If you would like to be a part of a team that’s enthusiastic, motivated and that has a wholistic approach to service delivery, then we would love to hear from you!

We especially welcome applications from Kimberley Aboriginal people.

Key Duties

  • Deliver mental health services to children, young people and family members. This can include one-on-one support, advocacy, group sessions or networking
  • Create a safe and confidential environment where children, young people and families can discuss their concerns and challenges openly
  • Plan, implement and evaluate group training for young people, covering areas such as life skills, anger management, problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Plan, implement and evaluate group educational or therapeutic programs aimed at families
  • Utilise evidence-based therapeutic approaches to guide children, young people and families in exploring emotions, thoughts and behaviours
  • Collaboratively develop treatment plans tailored to each person’s specific circumstances, emphasising a wholistic, client-based approach to service delivery
  • Provide assessment, interventions, education and ongoing referrals where necessary
  • Provide immediate support and intervention for children, young people and/or families experiencing crisis situations
  • Implement appropriate strategies to manage crises and ensure the safety of clients
  • Manage disclosures in an appropriate manor, guide this process for other staff members and liaise directly with the Department for Child Protection and Family Support to manage very sensitive topics with care
  • Maintain client records and statistical data, including assessment notes, progress reports and treatment plans, in line with service requirements
  • Document interactions and interventions in compliance with legal and ethical standards
  • Establish partnerships and links with other services to ensure effective referrals
  • Collaborate with other professionals such as psychologists, social workers and medical personnel to provide comprehensive care to clients
  • Contribute to a positive workplace culture that supports wellbeing and resilience, consistent with the organisation’s values and objectives
  • Engage in continuous professional development by attending workshops and training, thus staying updated with the latest research in counselling and mental health

Skills and Experience

We want you to be successful in your new role! This means you'll have a:

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology or Counselling including current membership with an appropriate professional body
  • Five years or more relevant work experience
  • Recognised and demonstrated clinical excellence in trauma informed practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and the ability to work with Aboriginal young people, families, and communities
  • A demonstrated broad and holistic understanding of mental health issues as they relate to Aboriginal people in the Kimberley context
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging and building strong relationships with, and motivate, 'at risk' Aboriginal young people
  • Ability to be innovative and flexible, work independently, demonstrate initiative, and work effectively under pressure
  • High level technical information coordination skills and written communication skills including producing high quality documents, case notes, reports, spreadsheets and other information
  • Competence with client data bases including how to accurately input, extract and analyse data
  • High level of commitment to self-care, reflective practice and supervision

 Licenses and Checks

  • National Police Clearance
  • Working With Children Check
  • WA Driver's License
  • registration with an appropriate body based on your qualification
