About Us?

The Institute for Urban Indigenous Health Ltd was established by its founding members to provide a coordinated/integrated approach to the planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations within the Southeast Qld Region.

The Child and Maternal Health aim is to support parents, infants and children from preconception and early pregnancy through to middle childhood (12 years of age) to enhance family functioning and promote childhood development and parental wellbeing. The Birthing in Our Community (BiOC) project is underpinned by a collaborative agreement between three Brisbane-based organisations: The IUIH, the Mater Hospital, and the Brisbane Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS). A new model of maternity care aims to provide comprehensive and culturally safe maternal and infant health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, their infants and families

About the Role?

The purpose of this position is to lead a team of Family Support Workers offering care to women birthing at the Mater Hospital and participating in the delivery of Family Support services to a small caseload of women that are considered to have higher needs or require more complex management. The Family Support Worker Team Leader will also participate in the provision of cultural mentoring and support to the non-Indigenous members of the BiOC team.

  • Lead the Family Support Worker Team to provide quality, value-added services to women in accordance with community needs
  •  Assist with creating a pathway for culturally respectful engagement between women, midwives, and other service providers
  • Manage a caseload of women ensuring regular contact and follow up to ensure priorities and action are met in conjunction with other team members
  • Collaborate with Midwives, Practice Nurse and Social health team to ensure client needs are being met
  • Support mothers with the logistical challenges of attending appointments through ensuring transport needs are met, and education is provided regarding the purpose and importance of attending the appointment
  • Establish strong working relationships with clients, their families, industry professionals, relevant Government Departments and agencies and members of the community

About You?

  • Current Blue Card
  • Current Criminal History Check
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (Qld)
  • First Aid Certificate
  • CPR Certificate

Desirable, but not mandatory:

  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and /or communities
