About the team

This is a role in the Client Experience team within the Cancer Information & Support Services Division, reporting to the Lead, Legal & Financial Support Services. This team facilitates the provision of financial, legal and practical support services to people affected by cancer experiencing financial hardship, in order to reduce the financial burden associated with a cancer diagnosis and improve the welling of people affected by cancer. These services include:

  1. Financial support in the form of financial grants to assist with everyday expenses, financial counselling, financial planning and small business accounting.
  2. Legal and workplace support with issues arising from a cancer diagnosis, treatment or caring responsibilities.
  3. Practical support such as accommodation and transport services during cancer treatment, and financial assistance to pay for cleaning and gardening services.

About the role:

The Financial Navigator will empower people affected by cancer to make informed financial decisions to alleviate and prevent financial hardship. The Financial Navigator will provide tailored information, guidance and support to patients and carers about managing financial issues that can arise from a cancer diagnosis through to cancer survivorship. Working closely with Financial Counsellors, and legal and practical support coordinators, the Financial Navigator will assess clients and direct them to the suitable financial support service/s, ensuring clients' access appropriate assistance at the right time.

This role is a part-time, 24-month contact. The role is based in our Woolloomooloo head office, however, candidates in NSW who can work efficiently and effectively from one of our regional offices will also be considered. The role will commence immediately based on candidate availability, and therefore applications will be reviewed as they are received.  Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Provide information and guidance on clients' rights and options to manage their financial issues, including:
  • Coaching to improve money management skills,
  • Preparing a budget and ongoing budgeting support,
  • Understanding options to manage everyday expenses and debts, and
  • Help to access utility hardship programs and government concessions and payments.
  • Triage incoming referrals for patients and carers seeking tailored financial information and support, including identifying financial issues and determining appropriate internal or external support and/or services required.
  • Conduct eligibility assessments for CCNSW's Financial Support Services and navigate clients to internal and external specialists (internal financial counsellors and external financial planners or small business accountants).
  • Build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, in order to increase awareness and understanding of CCNSW's information and support services.
  • Be a subject matter expert for financial support, including delivering stakeholder training and community education to increase financial knowledge and understanding of financial options for people affected by cancer.
  • Identify other legal, practical and emotional needs of clients and collaborate with Client Experience and wider Divisional staff to navigate clients to appropriate internal and external support services.

 About you

Essential:

  • Completed or currently studying a Certificate IV in Community Services Work or equivalent or higher qualification (e.g. Diploma of Financial Counselling or Diploma of Community Services), including completion of Financial Literacy Education (CHCSS00077) units:
  • CHCEDU005: Work with clients to identify financial literacy education needs.
  • CHCEDU006: Improve clients' fundamental financial literacy skills.
  • CHCEDU007: Provide group education on consumer credit and debt.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs of people experiencing financial hardship and coaching skills to improve financial literacy and management of finances.
  • High level written and oral communication skills and experience communicating with vulnerable clients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of people and professionals.
  • Capacity to take initiative, problem solve and adapt priorities as required.
  • Experience with maintaining accurate records and administrative systems.

Desirable:

  • Basic knowledge of or interest in oncology, cancer services and the needs of persons affected by cancer.
  • 2 years' experience in community services sector supporting clients with financial issues (e.g. as a Financial Capability Worker or Financial Counsellor).
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Engage and Case Management system.
