Location: Awabakal Country - John Hunter Hospital

The role:

As a Gardener, you will showcase your expertise in grounds maintenance, focusing on John Hunter Campus and Wansey Dialysis Centre grounds at Charlestown. You'll collaborate with a skilled team of three qualified Gardeners, reporting directly to the Head Gardener daily, as well as to the Engineering management. John Hunter Engineering Department, a dynamic team of fifty-one, oversees all maintenance duties on the campus in a supportive and collaborative environment. This position operates from 6:00 to 14:57, over a nine-day fortnight.


The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated skills, experience, and qualifications in garden and grounds maintenance. A team player with a positive outlook, you should thrive in both collaborative settings and when working independently. Opportunities for internal training through the MyHealth learning system, complemented by a comprehensive Hunter New England Health orientation upon starting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Mowing, weeding, pruning, fertilising, and spraying as required for garden and grounds maintenance.
  • Ensuring gardening plants and equipment are well-maintained and safe.
  • Adhering to all health and safety regulations, including the use of PPE as necessary.
  • Collaborating in the upkeep of facility exteriors and ensuring cleanliness of carparks, paths, walkways, and gardens.
  • Keeping Health Service grounds free from litter and debris for safety.
  • Fulfilling additional duties as assigned by the Head Gardener, JHH Planning Maintenance Coordinator, or Engineering Manager.
  • Maintaining cooperative relationships with management, trades staff, and hospital personnel.

This is an opportunity to work for the largest employer in the region which services a population of more than 900,000 across the Hunter, New England, and Lower Mid North Coast areas. John Hunter Hospital is a Level 6, tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital and is the largest hospital in the Hunter New England Local Health District.

Requirements:

  • Holds a completed Certificate III in Horticulture or other qualification deemed equivalent.
  • Previous experience with gardens and grounds maintenance.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW and willing and able to travel for work purposes.
