Gardener / Ground's person
Upper Ngumby Vineyard is a family-owned property located near Yarra Glen, Victoria. Situated on a rising hillside, our 40-hectare (100-acre) property has superb eye-catching views across the Yarra Valley and frontage to the Yarra River.
The property has a house block with established gardens, an orchard with fruit and olive trees, a dam block with established trees, a vegetable garden, and extensive grassed areas. In addition, we have 25-hectares (approx. 65 acres) under vine, with varietals such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz (and different clones within these varietals).
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced gardener / ground's person. This role involves general care of all grounds and facilities, day to day property and equipment maintenance, and some machinery operation.
This is a hands-on role and as such you will need to be proactive, well organised, able to work independently and also as part of a team.
Responsibilities
- Gardening duties such as mowing, planting, pruning, edging, reticulation maintenance, and weed control
- Ground’s person duties such as keeping all roads, pathways clean and free from rubbish and other debris
- General tool maintenance
- Apply chemicals in a safe manner in accordance with manufacturer's directions and keep records of their use
- Maintain a budget for all Grounds activities
- Perform various tractor operations, including spraying, slashing, mowing
- Ensure bio-security protocols adopted by all staff, Contractors, visitors
- Additional duties, seasonally and as required, in the vineyard including:
- Pruning, shoot and fruit thinning, wire lifting, training of young vines
- Collaborate with external contractors for specialised vineyard services and equipment
- Assist with vineyard infrastructure maintenance.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

- Be able to work independently and be self-motivated
- Prior experience in grounds maintenance and garden operations
- Forklift licence / tractor driving experience are preferred
- Current drivers’ licence and own transport are essential
- Excellent communication skills
- Good health and a reasonable level of fitness
- A willingness to learn and take direction
- Safe use chemicals certificate will be required and can be obtained through ongoing training & development
