APS6 Senior Investigators are being sought for two regional locations, Melbourne Victoria (multiple positions) and Darwin NT (one position). You are required to clearly nominate your preferred location within your application.

About Our Team:

The ABF is responsible for border operations, investigations, compliance, detention, enforcement functions, and continues to be Australia's Customs Service.

 Maritime and Enforcement South delivers ABF's operational effects across Victoria and Tasmania. In a rapidly evolving global environment, we perform to the highest standards while remaining agile, anticipating and respond to emerging threats. ABF officers capitalise on opportunities to partner with domestic and international border, customs, immigration, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

This recruitment round will also be open for persons wishing to be employed with Investigation Operations Northern Territory. This section is a small team who work regularly with other Border Force Teams and local law enforcement to achieve operational outcomes.

Regional Investigations VIC/TAS and Investigation Operations Northern Territory are responsible for the investigation and enforcement of serious offences against the Customs Act 1901, Migration Act 1958, as well as other legislation pertaining to the illegal movement of people and goods across the Australian border continuum.

Both teams work closely with domestic and international stakeholders to investigate serious border crime, migration and trade related crime, both pre and post border.

Investigation priorities include:

· Movement of prohibited goods into and out of Australia including illicit drugs, firearms, child exploitation material and wildlife

· Exploitation of foreign workers and Australia's migration system

· Serious or complex migration, visa and citizenship fraud

· Trade related crime including serious revenue evasion and corruption within the supply chain

Both teams also actively contribute to Commonwealth organised crime strategies through participation in multi-agency joint task-forces and national committee frameworks.

 Specific duties/responsibilities:

· Lead small and large teams in dynamic operational environments

· Undertake investigations into allegations of border related offences.

· Support investigations through the collection of evidence including the execution of search warrants, arrests of suspects, obtaining statement and conducting examinations.

· Contribute to an on-call duty officer capability.

· Maintain critical qualifications, skills and knowledge.

Duties and responsibilities:

APS6 Senior Investigators work under limited direction to investigate breaches of migration, customs and other border related legislation in accordance with the Department's policies. They use a range of internal/external resources, investigative techniques, and gather evidence which may be presented to a court to support prosecutions.  

 APS6 Senior Investigators work within internal or blended teams and may be seconded in support of other government and law enforcement agencies. There are also opportunities to work as part of the Illicit Tobacco Task Force and the Illicit Trade Unit.

As professionals in their field, ABF Investigators uphold the highest standards of workplace integrity and work within the framework of the Australian Government Investigation Standards (AGIS), Judiciary and relevant legislation.

This role requires overtime, work outside of business hours and on-call duties. There is also a requirement for interstate, intrastate, overnight travel, and extended travel periods to attend courses. This role requires you to interact with international travellers and crew. As such you will be required to maintain compliance with the Australian Health Protection Principal directions.

Additional information (Role requirements/qualifications):

For Investigation roles you may be required to obtain qualifications and undertake duties including

· Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) and Negative Vetting 1 - or ability to acquire within 12 months

· Hold a current Australian driver's licence

· Certificate IV in Government Investigation or other recognised program

· Viewing Objectionable Material course (IGEC)

· Operational Safety Training

· Custodial firearms safe handling certification

· Have an ability to acquire a sound understanding of departmental systems

· Additional security clearance requirements for joint agency operations and secondments

· State or federal constable designation for seconded officers
