About the Role
The General Practitioner/Medical Officer is responsible for the medical admission assessment, ongoing medical review and treatment planning, responding to the deteriorating patient and recommendations for escalation in care, ordering required investigations, medication prescription and management and medical clearance for discharge from the inpatient unit or for transfer within the correctional setting. Participation in relevant team based planning meetings and leading regular ward rounds is an essential part of the role.
This role starts at 16 hours per week. This will later increase to a total of 36 hours per week in September, 2024!
This role is remunerated according to the Medical Practitioners Award 2020 - Community Medical Practitioner, Pay Point 8 - $59.21921 per hour + an over award based on years of experience.

Duties
- Undertake medical assessments and plan medical treatment using best practice and clinical guidelines.
- Work within inpatient and outpatient medical services, as according to the pre-determined roster and when requested/required, work flexibly to cover across SVCHS services to support the medical service provision.
- Provide medical assessment and support, at nursing staff request, for urgent patient care following the SVCHS Emergency Healthcare and Medical Response in the event of a Code Black situation.
- Participate in the after-hours On-Call Medical Roster.
- Ensure medical care is provided in line with policies and procedures required of Justice Health, SVHM, SVCHS, G4S and Corrections Victoria Monitor and maintain all aspects of confidentiality in relation to clinical care.
- Action required referrals to support ongoing assessment and treatment of patients requiring specialist intervention and a multidisciplinary approach to care.
- Lead and/or participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, ward rounds and other clinical management meetings for team based care planning.
- Ensure timely entry of clinical documentation, using the electronic medical record and adherence to local documentation standards, including compliance with professional standards.
- Establish and maintain effective liaison, relationships and networking within and across a broad range of key stakeholders, including but not limited to, the Correctional Services provider, Justice Health, Corrections Victoria, SVHM specialist departments, other SVCHS staff, sessional and visiting health professionals and external agencies.

- Registration with APHRA
- Evidence of ongoing CME participation

About the Department
St Vincent's Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health, mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison, Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 1107 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.
