Join us and help drive innovation and sustainability in our projects.General SuperintendentRole Context:Surface Superintendents are responsible and accountable for the management surface area and all infrastructure to support shaft sinking and will ensure that all planned work is completed and that the project is run in accordance with the production schedule. The superintendent will be expected to be always present at their area of control. They are responsible for ensuring any required statutory compliance in their area on their shift by ensuring that all personnel and contractors under their direction supervise activities within their area of control.Surface Superintendents will be expected to oversee operations on the site surface and employed on a competency basis.You'll be:

  • Understanding and implement the Company’s safety policy, standards, and systems.
  • Ensuring that Supervisors conduct risk assessments on activities within their area of responsibility, ensuring that the methods and systems of work are safe.
  • Appreciating the responsibilities of personnel undertaking work in your area of responsibility and satisfy yourself by communication and observation that they are aware of those responsibilities and are appropriately equipped to play their part.
  • Taking part in pre-start activities at the beginning of each shift.
  • Ensuring that project schedules are safely executed on time and strive for continuous improvement to attain operational excellence.
  • Conducting health and safety inspections, and record and follow up any actions that are identified. Ensuring accident and near-miss reporting procedures are understood and complied with and assist with accident investigations as required.
  • Having agreed specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound KPI`s with regular appraisals with their respective line manager.
  • Be aware of all active permits relating to your area of responsibility. You will know what the Major Hazards in your area of responsibility are.
  • Ensure that the incoming shift superintendent is briefed on all relevant matters, including any outstanding remedial actions that have been identified as part of a statutory inspection, where the operation spans the interval of more than one shift in any day.
  • Immediately rectify or stop any operation or work that in your opinion needs to be rectified or stopped on grounds of safety.
  • Scheduling and conduct routine site safety tours, including those which include members of the safety team and contractor personnel.
  • Intervening when personnel are failing to discharge their health and safety responsibilities and encourage good behavior and practice.
  • Set a personal example on all matters of health and safety. Actively contribute to site safety review meetings.
  • Ensuring that the controls that are in place to manage Major Hazards are being applied across your area of responsibility, and that potential problems and updates are identified and communicated. You will ensure that adequate competent persons are assigned to operate the Major Hazard controls.
  • Ensuring that checks are in place to demonstrate that any equipment installed on the site is installed to an agreed standard and that the equipment commissioning, and planned maintenance programs are being followed. You will understand the permitting system(s) that authorize work plans and major hazard activities prior to invasive works taking place in your area of responsibility and satisfy yourself that they are being adhered to.
  • Ensuring that contractors have adequate numbers of competent persons in place to complete the planned tasks.
  • Making any area safe where, during an inspection, you identify uncontrolled hazards safe and communicate with persons with the competence and authority to rectify the problem.
  • Ensuring the controls that enable safe work at height are being followed. You will ensure that the scheme for planning and signing-off lifting is being followed, and that any equipment being used is within date.
  • Ensuring that the rules for the safe operation of the site transport system are followed.
  • Ensuring there is suitable edge protection to prevent heavy vehicles leaving the road, if it is in poor condition or unsuitable you will have it repaired or replaced.
  • Ensuring that lights, beacons, and audible warnings required for the safe operation of vehicles, plant or equipment are operational or that the machine is taken out of service.
  • Ensuring that you are familiar with the fire protection plan and how it applies to your area of responsibility. You will ensure that contractors have trained and competent resource in place to deal with the outbreak of fire.
  • Ensuring that any system provided for automatic fire detection and / or suppression is operational, and immediately report any defect. You will ensure that any portable firefighting devices identified by the area plan are in place, and within their test date.
  • Ensuring that any material brought into the working area that is flammable is stored away from any potential ignition source, and that these materials are removed from the working area as soon as is practicable. You will satisfy yourself that a suitable evacuation route is in place in any work area and notified to all personnel during the pre-start briefing.
  • Making yourself familiar with the escape plan, escape routes and your role in the successful execution of that plan. You will ensure that you know how to raise the alarm, and that the communication systems in your area of responsibility are operational.
QualificationsYou'll have:
  • Management or Supervisory experience in a Mechanical background field
  • An understanding of the possible approaches to managing conflict.
  • Problem solving and decision-making techniques.
  • Staff management experience (knowledge transfer)
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Advanced written and spoken English. Competency in written/oral communication
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel as and when required.
  • A strong communication, networking, collaboration, and well-developed team-working skills, especially in multi-discipline and multi-cultural teams.
  • An ‘Incident Free’ mind-set and be a role model for their project team (Direct/Indirect hires).
  • A proven HSSE and QA/QC leadership in managing and delivering large complex onshore construction projects.
  • A full understanding of how all elements of the project scope integrate and interface with each other and are managed to successfully deliver the right project outcome - from construction, and through to commissioning and handover to operations.
  • A high focus on identifying and delivering the identified deliverables, which meet project expectations from a quality and performance perspective, with minimal integration challenges to current operations.
  • An excellent teamwork skill being able to work with the various sub-teams to resolve issues and reach decisions that are in the best interests of the integrated project team.
  • An ability to work effectively in a diverse, multidisciplinary team environment, including Interface management experience, within facilities, and across other functions,
