About the Baker Institute

Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is an independent, internationally renowned medical research facility. Our work extends from the laboratory to wide-scale community studies with a focus on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

About the Role 

This is a position for a research trained academic or medical scientist who will be expected to carry out independent and/or team research within the field in which they are appointed and to carry out activities to develop their research expertise relevant to the particular field of research.  Up to two positions will be available.

Key Duties

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Conduct research and produce conference and seminar papers and publications from that research.
  • Contribute to preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies.
  • Co-supervise or supervise major honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • Provide guidance in research effort of junior members of Research and Academic staff.
  • Provide direct supervision to research staff and supervision of Australian and international students in collaboration with leading universities and institutes in Scandinavia, Asia, Middle East, and Europe.
  • Be responsible for managing ongoing research projects within available budget.

Skills and Experience


You will have:

  • A Doctoral or medical qualification in the relevant discipline area or equivalent qualifications or research experience.
  • Expertise in the analysis and managing of large-scale sequencing of genomics is essential, specifically, epigenetic data (such as whole-genome bisulfite sequencing, WGBS, methylation capture sequencing, ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq).
  • Experience working with a range of analytical software is essential with proven skills in programming (Python, R, C/C++) and experience with Linux/Unix environment.
  • Prior experience working with clinical data mapping software and/or computational researchers involving clinical/epigenetic data.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and extend clinical data standards into multiple epigenomic data sharing projects including ENCODE and accessed from UCSC using broad peak bed files.
  • Demonstrated statistical analysis and manuscript and research proposal preparation skills; including a solid track record of refereed research publications.
  • Experience in successfully supervising, mentoring and coaching to support the development of research staff and/or a demonstrated trajectory of leadership capability.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills, which enable the appointee to liaise effectively with a wide range of people at a variety of levels internal and external to the Institute.
