Our team
This role is based within the Geochronology and Stratigraphy Section, part of the Mineral Systems Branch in the MEG Division. The Geochronology and Stratigraphy Section will support the responsible development of a diverse mineral resources sector in Australia's low-carbon economy by providing precompetitive information and data to support exploration and drive new mineral and energy discoveries.
This role will support Geoscience Australia's work to provide authoritative and up-to-date subdivision and nomenclature of geological rock units in Australia. This information underpins and enables a broad range of maps and analyses regarding mineral prospectivity and clean energy assessments, in support of Australia's net zero policy agenda. Our work supports Australian Government initiatives with the aim of stimulating mineral exploration investment, including in critical minerals, to open new producing provinces with mineral endowments.
The key duties of the position include
The Geoscientist - Stratigrapher will support an improved knowledge of Australia's geology and its endowment of mineral, groundwater and energy systems.
In this role you will:
  • Be a part of the transition to net zero emissions, with a focus on Australian critical minerals and their importance to the wider community and whole of government agenda.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team to compile, synthesise, integrate and interpret a range of geoscientific data to inform potential for critical minerals at regional to national scale.
  • Assist in acquiring and delivering analytical geoscientific data to support project outputs.
  • Be responsible for entering, updating and managing the Australian Stratigraphic Units Database.

To be successful in the role you will:
  • Provide scientific knowledge in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Australian Stratigraphic Units Database and associated geological unit information to support Geoscience Australia and the Australian Government's critical minerals research and development priorities.
  • Have a passion for the role of geoscience in supporting the transition to net zero emissions, with a focus on Australian critical minerals and their importance to the wider community and whole of Government agenda.
  • Be a team player who collaborates, actively shares knowledge, is open to developing new skills and takes personal responsibility for their work.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to building a positive and inclusive culture in the team and Mineral Systems Branch.
  • Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical and professional way.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
  • A demonstrated ability to apply your geoscientific skills to geological problems. Skills in geoscience, stratigraphy and database management will be highly regarded.
  • A self-starter with the capability to work independently, subject to limited direction and with attention to detail.
  • A commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive culture in your team and workplace.
