GERIATRIC MEDICINE - REGISTRAR | BASED IN BEAUTIFUL SOUTH TASMANIA

Our client is seeking a motivated and experienced Registrar in Geriatric Medicine to join their Older Persons unit.

The Position:

The Hospital’s Older Persons Unit is for acutely unwell older patients, providing input to the Orthopaedic ward with Orthogeriatrics service and consultation work to all wards within the Hospital.

The successful applicant will be working with of a team of junior doctors and Consultants with potential rotations including the Older Persons Unit, the Orthogeriatrics liaison service, the hospital Consults service, Jasmine Unit (at the Royal Fagan Centre, focusing on rehabilitation in patients with BPSD and P1/P3 (multidisciplinary rehabilitation). 

Preferences for rotations will be discussed between the trainee and Director of Clinical Teaching in Aged Care prior to commencement, considering educational objectives.

The Registrar is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as determined by the Medical Workforce Unit

The position is suitable for BPT trainees, GP Registrars and those interested in Advanced Training in Geriatrics.

Focus of Duties:

  1. Admission and care of patients in the wards including a daily ward round and liaison with Specialist Medical Staff regarding patients.
  2. Attend Specialist ward rounds and record all decisions made in the medical history.
  3. Timely response to calls by members of the patient’s care team.
  4. Ensure that consultations occur when requested.
  5. Interact with families or carers of hospital patients.
  6. Accurate and timely recording of drugs and treatment.
  7. Undertake procedures as required.
  8. Accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous recording in the medical record including progress notes each day.
  9. Discharge planning.
  10. Provide Discharge Summary compliant with THS policy (or the appropriate standards) to ensure safe clinical handover to community-based care providers.
  11. Provide after-hours cover

The Hospital:

It’s the second oldest hospital in Australia and the largest hospital in Tasmania. The Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania and is the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School.  The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region.

It provides acute, sub-acute, mental health and aged care inpatient and ambulatory services to a population of about 250,000 people in the southern region.

Also, the hospital provides a comprehensive range of general and specialty medical and surgical services including many state-wide services such as cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, extensive burns treatment, hyperbaric medicine, neonatal and paediatric intensive care and high risk obstetrics.

The Emergency Department opened in March 2007. The department includes an assessment and planning and a short stay observation unit. ED has approximately 60,000 presentations per year.

The Older Persons Unit (OPU) has 16 beds at the hospital and for acutely unwell older patients, providing input to the Orthopaedic ward with Orthogeriatrics service and consultation work to all wards within the hospital.
